More from Brendon McCullum, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "There were things I think we did really well, too. I thought Rehan Ahmed was excellent on his return to the Test side and, for a little while, it looked like he could have a big impact on the game when he took those three quick wickets.

"In hindsight, if maybe we'd had a few more runs on the board, he could have been incredibly dangerous in their second innings.

"But it wasn't to be and we have to hold our hands up and admit we ran in second."

The Test team are next in action on 27 November when a three-Test series against New Zealand begins.

We expect the squad for that tour to be named in the next couple of days.

From what Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum have said, I wouldn't expect many changes.

I quite like this from Brendon McCullum.

"You have got to be honest and have that period of reflection," he told Sky Sports.

"It's an inward reflection. It's not 'sit around and talk to you guys about what you need to do right'.

"You have got to have that period of reflection and find ways of adding to what you have done so well but to have a couple of weeks to get back on the horse and get back to the feeling after the first Test and the style of play is a great opportunity."

They don't have to tell us about any tough conversations they are having or how they want to improve, as long as they are thinking about it.

  6. 'Shakeel's innings was absolutely sublime'published at 09:14 British Summer Time 26 October

More from Brendon McCullum, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "We pride ourselves on constantly looking for wickets and sometimes when you're not able to prise out those wickets, you look back on the things you do.

"We'll certainly look at ourselves and chat about how we might look to do things differently when we next come up against these situations.

"Sometimes, you do have to admit that guys play really well and I thought Saud Shakeel's innings was absolutely sublime.

"It wasn't ferocious but it was death by a thousand cuts. He was able to manipulate square of the wicket and he reduced his risk levels.

"He's obviously got a very sure defence as well and able to rotate the strike. We kept trying to throw things at him and manipulate our bowling line up to get those wickets but we weren't able to."

  8. 'Lower-order runs made the difference'published at 09:09 British Summer Time 26 October

More from Brendon McCullum, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "Winning the toss certainly could've been an advantage.

"I thought the score we got wasn't too bad, it was around par, then we probably leaked a few too many runs in Pakistan's first innings with those partnerships at the end.

"Saud Shakeel played a fabulous innings and was able to deflect the ball on both sides of the wicket and manipulate our spin and negate the threat. He batted with the tail really well.

"The two spinners came in and played freely at the end and put us under pressure.

"Those lower-order runs are the difference between leading by 50 or 60 and getting the opportunity to bowl last with a total on the board, and being 70 runs in arrears.

"Pressure told and again last night when we lost those wickets to some really good bowling. We weren't able to respond to that."

  9. What have you missed?published at 09:07 British Summer Time 26 October

Just joining us? Wondering what all of the fuss is about?

Pakistan have already won. It was a miserable, miserable morning for England.

They actually made a decent start through Harry Brook and Joe Root but after Brook was out on the cut after 40 minutes of play, England collapsed in dismal fashion.

Ben Stokes' dismissal summed it up. His mind looked utterly scrambled against spin as he shouldered arms to a straight ball and was plumb lbw for three.

Jamie Smith's shot was not pretty. He charged down the wicket, missed and was bowled.

Joe Root, the seventh wicket to fall, was the only one to get a really good ball as Noman Ali finished with six wickets and Sajid Khan four.

It meant England were dismissed for 112, leaving Pakistan needing just 36 to win the series and, despite Jack Leach getting Saim Ayub lbw in a small consolation, Shan Masood came out and bashed four fours and a six to take his side to a dramatic victory.

  10. 'Pakistan put us under pressure - we didn't respond'published at 09:06 British Summer Time 26 October

    Brendon McCullumImage source, Getty Images

England head coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "Obviously last series was an impressive performance from us on different types of wickets to what we saw here.

"We were very proud of that series win and what we were able to achieve but we also knew that was a bit of an outlier in terms of playing in Pakistan.

"We saw as the series went on the pitches changed quite substantially and we weren't quick enough to be able to adapt to that.

"Credit goes to Pakistan for the way they shuffled their team and brought in some wily campaigners, who are very, very good in those conditions.

"They also put us under a lot of pressure and we weren't able to respond.

"In the end, we can't have too many complaints about the result because we had our opportunities and Pakistan were better than us."

  12. 'We need to fight back for longer'published at 08:58 British Summer Time 26 October

    Ben StokesImage source, Getty Images

More from Ben Stokes, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "Last night, Sajid came out and played - he took some massive risks when we'd taken that wicket of Noman.

"Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't and fortunately for Pakistan, it paid off with the way he played.

"Ten or 15 runs on these kind of wickets are always massive and the way he came out and really took on our spinners was a huge moment in the game."

Could tactics to Shakeel have been different? "No."

On lessons to be learned: "When we get thrown challenges that are not unexpected, we need to find a way fight back for longer.

"We did it for very small periods but small periods in Test cricket isn't long enough. So when we do get that fightback, we need to do it for longer periods of time."

On performance today: "It's incredibly disappointing to lose a Test match.

"The reflection will be done quick, it's the way of the schedule, you've got reflect and move on quick because in two or three weeks we fly to New Zealand where we'll be faced with another challenge.

"Probably a completely different challenge but we have to stand up to that as well."

Ben Stokes asked about whether there is consideration of dropping one of the top six batters: "You can't shut the door on everything. Then you are being single-minded to what you want to do.

"But back to what I said before, there is no doubt in my mind that we have the best top six batsmen in England."

"There is no doubt in my mind and no doubt in Brendon's mind that we have the got the best top six players in England," Ben Stokes tells Sky Sports when asked about the batting struggles.

  15. McCullum backs Pope to stay at number threepublished at 08:51 British Summer Time 26 October

Ollie Pope has just been given the vote of confidence from England coach Brendon McCullum.

McCullum suggests Pope will keep his place at number three for England's next series.

"We know when Popey gets in he gets big scores," McCullum says.

"It is not an easy place to bat at number three. I know Popey will be disappointed with the volume of runs he has got.

"I expect him to bounce back in New Zealand and we will make sure he has the support around him to do so."

  16. 'Question marks over Pope'published at 08:49 British Summer Time 26 October

Clearly, there will be question marks about Ollie Pope batting at three and whether he is a number three.

I think they're yet to decide on the squad for New Zealand but you anticipate some kind of change there possibly.

How do they manage that middle-order and whether they want to keep Pope around because there is clearly a very talented player in there.

Would he be better served batting a bit further down the order or taking a break from the team?

  17. 'We couldn't stand up to the challenges'published at 08:47 British Summer Time 26 October

Ben Stokes is dismissed by Noman AliImage source, Getty Images

England captain Ben Stokes, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "The last couple of Tests we've been thrown some challenges and I think it's pretty easy to assess that were weren't able to stand up to those challenges.

"The great thing about sport is that those challenges will always come along but in the last two games we weren't able to match what Pakistan threw at us.

"We've got a very quick turnaround to another challenge in New Zealand so we've got to put the disappointment of the last two games behind us and move on."

All the usual questions you have when England lose a series but you do have to put a mitigation in that these last two Tests were literally extraordinary.

They were things that have not happened ever before.

  19. 'Highlights England's vulnerabilities'published at 08:43 British Summer Time 26 October

    Steven Finn
Former England fast bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Pakistan's approach in the second and third Tests highlights England's vulnerabilities against people who bowl well on spinning pitches.

That was highlighted across the India series and the last two Tests here.

What Pakistan have done to the pitches is clearly unprecedented. They played on an eight-day old pitch in the second Test and they've raked the middle of the pitch here.

But should England have been able to play better? I think the second Test was decided at the toss but when I look at this one, I think England were spooked on the first morning.

I don't think Ben Stokes had a great time yesterday as a skipper.

    About 70 or 80 singles in a knock of 130-odd for Saud Shakeel - that's a lot.

Somehow, it skipped Ben Stokes' leadership and I was actually shocked.

It can continue for 15 minutes or half an hour but it cannot continue for a whole day and you don't realise what is happening.
