I don't think I have ever seen a more aggressive and hostile spinner than Sajid Khan.

Bowled through the gate! This one is a half volley that Gus Atkinson has missed.

Sajid, not wanting to let Noman have all of the limelight, roars again in delight, pointing to the sky as he does.

    Pakistan are nearly there.

They are not, Aggers. Not by a long way it seems.

I thought the days of England collapsing at the end of a tour had gone.

Ben Foakes played differently but he averaged 29 from 25 Tests, don't forget.

We began this day wondering if the Test will go into tomorrow. Will it even make it past lunch?

Foakes may not be able to muscle 4s and 6s but his application on this wicket against spin would be very welcome now. 1s and 2s for a couple of hours mount up, like they did for Pakistan yesterday.

To summarise that previous post... If you're an England fan, you're better off in bed.

In short? The beginning of the end for England in this Test.

Joe Root and Harry Brook made a steady start to proceedings but once that partnership was broken, the tourists crumbled.

Noman Ali has done the damage for Pakistan, he had Brook caught behind on the cut to begin the collapse and then got Ben Stokes lbw after a bizarre leave from the England skipper.

Sajid Khan then bowled a charging Jamie Smith and Noman got Root to feather a superb delivery behind for 33 to end any lingering England hopes.

The visitors went from 66-3 to 85-7 and need a minor miracle to avoid defeat now.

Do Pakistan just have better players in these conditions?

One crumb of comfort is that, after this, England don't have another Test in Asia in their schedule until February 2027.

Pakistan's spinners have varied their pace throughout this Test. 42% of their deliveries have been below the 79 kph (49 mph) mark, compared to just 2.5% for the England spinners.

Pakistan's spinners have picked up eight wickets so far when they have bowled below that mark.

The difference in average speed between the two team's spinners have been around 5kph and that has meant more drift and turn for the Pakistani spinners as well.

They're taking drinks after that wicket, surely only delaying the speed of England's miserable collapse.

They actually started pretty well early on through Harry Brook and Joe Root!

Pakistan very much on top, they are completely dominating this.

Joe Root was the last hope but now he's gone.

    Root gone. Hope gone.

England's former captain had been the one digging in but he gets a beauty from the remarkable Noman Ali - one that turns and bounces to take the edge.

Root walks off shaking his head. Noman has five.

Pakistan have got England where they wanted them this morning.

We should remember it's not easy to bat out there. Here Joe Root gets one delivery to bounce and hit the wicketkeeper in the chest. The next is bouncing low towards Root's boot.

That doesn't make any of the past half an hour any better.

England have at least avoided an innings defeat. Two runs to Gus Atkinson takes the tourists into the lead and means Pakistan will have to bat again.

They're still lucky most of the country is still asleep. The last half an hour has been ugly and is going to mean a lot of criticisms resurface.

Why is anyone surprised, with the odd exception over years, England simply cannot bat in the subcontinent. They just don't have the technique, patience or attitude.

Pakistan know they are going to win. Sajid Khan is beaming at the top of his mark.

    Heads have gone.

England have idea what to do against Sajid Khan and Noman Ali.

Here Jamie Smith charges down, doesn't get anywhere near the pitch of the ball, has a swipe and is bowled in ugly fashion.

  20. Eng 74-5published at 24 overs

    Root 26, Smith 3

Pakistan's fielding has been good this morning too, that very tough drop of Harry Brook aside.

There have been sliding stops on the boundary and now a good dive at extra cover denies Jamie Smith a confidence-booster early on.
