I wonder who West Indies could bring back because this seems a comeback series of sorts with Liam Dawson and Luke Wood.

  2. WI 12-1published at 3 overs

Sight screen issues resolved, but Charles can't get Luke Wood away, and almost chops down onto his stumps to boot.

Just the one run from the over - Shai Hope's single from the first ball.

I played a club game in Australia the year I retired. I was in my trainers, was borrowing kit. Kim Garth was bowling at me and I asked to move the sightscreen. She told me it hadn't been moved all day and bowled me first ball.

  4. WI 12-1published at 2.2 overs

Wood continues, but there's a delay after two balls because Johnson Charles seemingly isn't happy with some flimsy black sheeting that's forming the edge of one of the sight screens.

You can see members of the public walking around behind it, which can't be ideal.

There is a mid-wicket in place but Hope can back himself when he knows he can pick length like that.

The hero of Chester-le-Street, Liam Dawson takes the ball at the other end.

His penultimate ball is a little short and Hope hoiks it over the short Bristol boundary at mid-wicket for the game's first.

The captain then retains the strike with a leg side single.

What Luke Wood does so well in the powerplay is getting the ball moving and moving late.

  8. WI 3-1published at 1 over

Johnson Charles gets his bat on his first delivery, another swinging ball from Wood, and takes a single.

Hope then faces out three dot balls to end the over.

I had completely forgotten that was a free hit. The crowd did better than me.

  10. WI 2-1published at 0.2 overs

    Woosh!

Wood goes for another yorker but fouls up his length and sees his ball fly past the chest of new batter Shai Hope.

Hope chips the subsequent delivery straight to mid-on, but it's a free hit so he's safe, and he takes a single too.

You turn up as an opening batter and there is nothing worse than getting out first ball.

    All reds!

Evin Lewis walks off chuntering, but that looks very out.

The replays show his bat hit the ground, producing a large spike on the snickometer, which may be the source of his confusion.

    Regardless, he's out of here.

What a sensational start for Luke Wood.

  18. Umpire reviewpublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 8 June

Back in the side, back in the wickets?!

Luke Wood strikes Evin Lewis on the pads with a full first delivery and up goes the umpire's finger.

    Lewis reviews immediately.

  19. Postpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 8 June

Luke Wood, in an England side for the first time since September 2023, will take the new ball for England.

Evin Lewis will face the first ball for the West Indies, with Johnson Charles at the other end.

Although Jos Buttler played the perfect innings in the first T20, England will want some more contributions with the bat.
