So, that brings an end to the opening day of this third round of the County Championship season.

The forecast is looking a bit better tomorrow, so hopefully we'll have less disruption.

We'll be back at 10:45 BST, so hope to see you then.

Josh Shaw does his job and sees out the final over capping an excellent day for the visitors.

James Bracey will come back tomorrow on 109 having put on 167 with Australia all-rounder Cameron Green who was forced off injured having made exactly 100 in his first innings for the county.

That stand helped Gloucestershire recover from trouble at 41-3 as Nathan Gilchrist picked up two early wickets before coming back to add three more and complete excellent figures of 5-61.

But with Bracey still in, Gloucestershire will hope he can nurse the lower order and get the total beyond 400.

We have had a couple of delays while a slightly confused urban fox interrupted proceedings, making his way from long off to deep backward square. But he's gone and the players are now joining him.

A perfect first day for the hosts who rattled through Glamorgan's flimsy defences, the ever-reliable Toby Roland-Jones taking 3-44 and Dane Paterson, Ryan Higgins and Zafar Gohar helping themselves to two wickets each.

In reply Middlesex have knocked off 63 - Stephen Eskinazi on 34 and Nathan Fernandes 26 - without too many issues before bad light brought an end to the day's play.

    Middlesex 63-0 v Glamorgan 199

    Guy Swindells
    BBC Radio London

Glamorgan could really do with a wicket this evening, just to settle the nerves but more to put a bit of pressure back on Middlesex.

Two overs to go. Joey Evison has ball in hand.

He almost picks up Josh Shaw with an outswinger that's edged straight to where a third/fourth slip would've been.

    Instead it's gone for four.

Shaw pinches a single to start the last over on strike and protect centurion James Bracey.

Hard to say who's more pleased at the end of an action-packed first day in conditions that would delight any seamer.

Worcestershire will be pleased with the way they bowled having stuck Essex in - especially after most of their attack were carted to all parts of Headingley last week - with Kiwi quick Jacob Duffy (4-39) superb with Matthew Waite (3-47) and Essex old boy Ben Allison (2-37) also very impressive.

They will also be happy with they way they didn't completely collapse in a heap again after being 22-4 thanks to Adam Hose and Brett D'Oliveira's gutsy stand of 76.

Essex will be delighted with they way they started with the ball - all of the attack looked dangerous - and they caught swallows - but will be irritated by that late stand.

Their effort of 179 also looks decent, especially if they can start well in the morning.

Any kind of lead will be very handy. At the moment it's 81.

Essex 179 v Worcestershire 98-4 - bad light stops play

    Frank Watson
    BBC Hereford & Worcester

That's probably going to be the end of it, I really do.

They've obviously taken a light meter reading. It's surprised everyone I think because it doesn't look as dark as it did a few minutes ago.

Adam Hose has just taken nine of Kasun Rajitha's last over and now has the highest score of the match (currently 38).

Brett D'Oliveira continues to offer typically robust support as they continue to treat the good balls with respect and the bad ones without any at all.

Just as Rajitha's about to start a new over the umpires get together and offer the light which, understandably, the batters accept.

That should be that for the day.

  9. Close of play at Hovepublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 18 April

    Sussex 227-2 v Surrey

Sussex batsman Tom Alsop takes evasive action

And they have called it at Hove.

A rapid start from Daniel Hughes, with 62 in 68 deliveries, got Sussex off to a flier against the champions and Tom Haines has burnished that with an impressive and unbeaten innings of 89.

He has had decent company while he has been building with Tom Alsop his capable hod carrier, finishing unbeaten on 39 (from 110 balls).

There was a bit of frustration from Surrey skipper Rory Burns who was initially a bit cheesed off that Gus Atkinson's short pitched bowling caused the umpires to suggest the light was not good.

And again there was some frustration from Burns they refused to change a ball that was doing nothing.

But the main source of angst was the wicket column which steadfastly refused to move upwards for Surrey as the Sussex men dug in.

So the two teams will resume tomorrow with Sussex in a strong position to push to a decent first innings score and Surrey needing quick wickets in the morning session.

  10. 'Beware Essex'published at 18:14 British Summer Time 18 April

    Essex 179 v Worcestershire 94-4

    Don Topley
    BBC Essex

This partnership between Adam Hose and Brett D'Oliveira is probably the most productive of this match.

Beware Essex and well done Worcestershire.

A lot of the crowd have gone and it's certainly got a little colder.

    Kent v Gloucestershire 334-6

Gloucestershire's second centurion of the innings!

James Bracey joins Cameron Green in reaching three figures and this is some fightback by the visitors at Canterbury.

    They were 41-3 before lunch.

  12. Postpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 18 April

    Essex 179 v Worcestershire 82-4

Brett D'Oliveira and Adam Hose have just ticked off a psychological milestone - Worcestershire trail by fewer than 100.

They've taken their partnership to 60, the joint highest of the game so far, off 79 balls which, on this surface, is a fine effort.

They would love to get to the close together now.

Essex have hit a bit of a lull.

They'd probably love to throw the ball to Sam Cook...

James Wharton top scored for Yorkshire

Bad light has brought an early end to proceedings on day one at the Riverside and it is a match that finished well balanced due to two wickets in the final over.

Yorkshire were twice in bother at 44-2 and 190-6 but have managed to put together partnerships throughout their knock that kept them afloat.

James Wharton, (above) with 69, and Dom Bess and George Hill, with a 105-run stand for the seventh wicket have dragged Yorkshire not only to within touching distance of a second batting bonus point, but a position of relative safety in the game.

Certainly Durham would have been hoping for better having put Jonny Bairstow's side in at the toss.

Yet a two wicket burst in the first two balls with the second new ball from Ben Raine have yanked things back in Durham's direction somewhat.

  14. Close of play at Derbypublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 18 April

    Derbyshire 216-4 v Northants

    Andrew Radd
    BBC Radio Northampton

We're off for the day here at Derby.

All a bit frustrating as the players came back on at 17:35 BST, only to leave the field again for bad light just eight balls later.

It's now raining again, most of the spectators headed home some time ago - and now everyone else can do the same.

Happily, the weather forecast for tomorrow is more encouraging.

  15. 'Doesn't do the game any favours'published at 18:01 British Summer Time 18 April

Sussex 227-2 v Surrey - bad light stopped play

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

I have to day that this is a situation where it doesn't do the game any favours and you could hear the boos around the ground.

When we went off the light was better than it is now and we've come out, there's no wind to shift this heavy cloud cover and we've come out for two overs.

Cricket is meant to be the entertainment business so if we were to stop two hours ago then that should have been it for the day but to come out for that period of time...

stand for D'Oliveira and Hosepublished at 18:01 British Summer Time 18 April

    Essex 179 v Worcestershire 74-4

Another over ticked off by the Pears as they inch closer to stumps.

Kasun Rajitha has just been brought back in to the attack and his first ball is carted to the square-leg boundary by Brett D'Oliveira.

The Pears see out the rest of the over without alarm.

Noah Thain is next on and his first ball is met with an almost identical square-cut from the Pears captain for another boundary to bring up the 50 partnership with Adam Hose.

Thirteen overs left today. Not sure we'll get all those. The lights have been on for a while.

  17. Pears hanging in therepublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 18 April

    Essex 179 v Worcestershire 62-4

It's a fine balance as a batter on a pitch like this that's offering plenty to the bowlers.

You can't sit back and absorb the pressure because there will be a ball with your name on sooner or later.

You need to counter-punch and try to give the bowlers something to think about and Adam Hose is doing just that.

He's just taken a step down and imperiously driven Shane Snater back past him all along the carpet for four.

Two balls later he's on the top of the bounce thrashing it through point with a blur of hands and bat face.

He goes to 22. Worcestershire battling well.

  18. Bad light stops playpublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 18 April

    Sussex 227-2 v Surrey

And after 11 balls, they are off again.

To be honest it didn't look that bright when they returned in comparison to when they first went off and it is no surprise they are trooping off again.

Communication has not been the winner there with an hour and a half delay before an ill-fated attempt to get things going again with precious few announcements of the umpires' thinking.

That is probably it for the day as well as it would be a surprise if it got brighter.

Surrey skipper Rory Burns has not looked in the best of moods throughout that whole process and has just finished bending the ears of Ben Debenham and Paul Pollard.

Burns initially appeared annoyed when Gus Atkinson was told to stop bowling short but then seemed to be trying to get the ball changed without success.

Middlesex are off to a solid start after bowling out Glamorgan for 199 at Lord's. The hosts are 28-0.

They came back on for a couple of overs at Derby, before going off for bad light again! Derbyshire added six runs to move to 216-4 against Northants.

Gloucestershire are going along really well at Kent. They're 309-5 with James Bracey on 81.

Just a reminder that play has been abandoned for the day between Lancashire and Leicestershire with Lancashire closing on 61-3.

  20. 'Don't see how we'll be out there for long'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 18 April

    Sussex 222-2 v Surrey

I'm not sure the conditions are any different to what they were when we came off.

I honestly don't see how we'll be out there for long.
