Summary

  1. Green's backpublished at 13 overs

    Northants 117-3 v Somerset 215-3

Northants needing 14 an over currently, you do not see that successfully pulled off for seven overs often, but whilst David Willey is there they have hope.

Ben Green is given a second, the next over, having been taken for 16 from his first.

Into the surface, an attempted pull plops back to the bowler, easy grab in his follow through for Somerset skipper ewis Gregory.

Decent knock by Justin Broad, Saif Zaib the new bat.

Northants well behind the DLS now as mizzle lingers above the ground still.

What a game this is by the way compared to the previous two nights when we have been almost done on the live text comms by this time!

  4. Spin to win?published at 12 overs

    Northants 112-2 v Somerset 215-3

Yes we will, Roelof van der Merwe, after a quiet few weeks and months back in his native South Africa, is into the attack.

He nearly has David Willey caught behind, but it is just out of Tom Banton's reach.

What a nailed reverse sweep that is from Justin Broad, one of the cleanest hits tonight, he then orthodox sweeps for one which could have been two.

Last ball is swept for six by Willey, Northants winning the over. Van der Merwe has stats of 16 overs, 6-171 in the T20 Blast this year, with an economy rate of 10.26.

  5. Postpublished at 11 overs

    Northants 100-2 v Somerset 215-3

Lewis Gregory to bowl from the David Capel End now for his second over.

From the Linn Wilson Centre End earlier he got the prize wicket of Ricardo Vasconcelos.

A leading edge between two cover fielders sees Justin Broad get away with one, then next ball Dave Willey has Gregory on his knees appealing for lbw, nothing given and no review taken.

Four through backward point then adds insult to Gregory's appeals, but replays show it was sliding down leg.

Will we finally see spin now?

  6. 124 needed off 60 ballspublished at 10 overs

Ben Green is into the attack.

He beats Dave Willey outside off before he gets off strike.

Justin Broad then gets down and paddle sweeps first all the way for six and then a one-bounce four over the wicketkeeper!

Long leg is moved almost to a long stop behind the keeper - so Broad pulls wide of him for four more!

Much better over but Northants have got a gargantuan task ahead of them in the second half of this chase - 124 needed in 60 balls.

After nine overs from their innings, Somerset were 79-1 so just three runs in it.

  8. Postpublished at 9 overs

    Northants 76-2 v Somerset 215-3

The asking rate is more than 12 an over as Jake Ball returns.

He errs in line and Dave Willey gets it off the pads to fine leg for four.

Justin Broad is the new man and has a few early sighters before Ball is down leg for a wide. A sweet drive only finds cover and it's a solid return for Ball.

How long do Northants give it here with the required rate ever-climbing?

  9. Postpublished at 8 overs

    Northants 69-2 v Somerset 215-3

That's a nice settler for Somerset.

They still have so many to defend here.

Oh yes, David Willey eying a chance to rock back again.

This time he steps off side and gets his wrists through the ball and whacks it way over deep-square for six.

    That's down to Abingdon Park!

But then Ricardo Vasconcelos tries, gets it up into the breeze and it's high, high towards long leg and really well caught.

    Lewis Gregory with the breakthrough.

  11. Overton bowls his four straight through againpublished at 20:35 British Summer Time 5 September

    Mark Davis
Former Somerset seamer on BBC Radio Somerset

It is quite nice for Craig Overton to bowl four straight, then go and graze in the outfield.

Anthony Gibson: He does not graze though he takes catches for fun.

Davis: Well yes I suppose, but at least he does not have to worry about the pressure overs, he can concentrate on his catching!

  12. Postpublished at 7 overs

    Northants 60-1 v Somerset 215-3

Craig Overton, as often happens, bowls his spell straight through.

It's a great over for just two singles in five balls.

But Dave Willey then spots some length very early, rocks back and hammers it flat over long-on for six!

    What a shot.

But a great spell from Overton, 1-22 from his four overs.

  13. 'Northants ahead in terms of the powerplays'published at 20:31 British Summer Time 5 September

    Mal Loye
    Former Northants and England batsman

There is not going to be a lot in this, in terms of the powerplay.

He has got that from outside off stump, shovelled that on its way and somehow managed to get even more elevation on it, not content with four, wanting and getting six.

Northants ahead in terms of the powerplays in the end, after 18 from that over.

  14. Postpublished at 6 overs

    Northants 52-1 v Somerset 215-3

Jake Ball is given the final over of the powerplay.

He starts with a big leg side wide before a leg-bye and a Dave Willey pull for one.

Ricardo Vasconcelos then gets down to paddle sweep four past the wicketkeeper.

Then gets even lower and paddle over the keeper for six!

Ball then wides and the extra ball is a full toss taken through midwicket for four!

Great over for the hosts. 18 off. A healthy powerplay now.

  15. Postpublished at 5 overs

    Northants 34-1 v Somerset 215-3

Third straight set here for Craig Overton.

Ricardo Vasconcelos opens the blade to steer a boundary past short-third man.

And then a drop leg side and great running for two to end the fifth over.

  16. 'Where there is life there is hope'published at 20:22 British Summer Time 5 September

    Andrew Radd
    BBC Radio Northampton

Slightly more productive over that for Northamptonshire.

Where there is life there is hope.

These two sides have not played each other much recently in T20 cricket.

I remember the two games in 2020, Covid times, when both home sides won, before that they last met in 2013 in this format. (Jos Buttler played in that one).

  17. Postpublished at 4 overs

    Northants 26-1 v Somerset 215-3

Ah here we go. Dave Willey cracks the first ball of the fourth down the ground for four.

Then gives himself some room and nails a drive up and over extra-cover and all the way for six.

Drizzle falling. Pace off now from Josh Davey as Willey pushes to cover before taking a single to deep midwicket.

    Chase up and running now.

  18. 'Great bowling - bowling to their plans so far'published at 20:18 British Summer Time 5 September

    Mal Loye
    Former Northants and England batsman

Great bowling, bowling to their plans so far.

They will try and bring it into Ricardo Vasconcelos who is otherwise strong on the cut shot.

  19. Postpublished at 3 overs

    Northants 14-1 v Somerset 215-3

You know what you get with Craig Overton - banging away on a good length.

It's very hard to knock off and a tight over goes for just five singles.

  20. 'One of these two has to go big'published at 20:17 British Summer Time 5 September

    Mark Davis
Former Somerset seamer on BBC Radio Somerset

They have to crash hard in this powerplay and that will present opportunities for Somerset.

One of these two has to go big.
