Ian, Southampton: 39 overs per side brings back happy memories of watching the Sunday League on the BBC in the 70s. If a team made over 200 in their 40 overs, it felt like a massive score. How times have changed!

It could be quite a nice evening and if there's no more rain coming, we could see some good cricket here.

The covers are off, we're not far away now.

The golf carts and their trailing rope are scooting around the outfield, wicking off any surface level moisture.

    Almost there.

Chris, Herts: Michael Ball cast as head groundsman, with Lee Mead as the snotty team manager pressuring the ground staff to get the game on. Beverley Knight as mother nature. Ground staff the musical, coming to theatres near you soon.

I saw an improvised musical group in Manchester last week - I reckon they could spin this up pretty rapidly. Booking Michael Ball might be a bit of a challenge, mind...

David, Manchester: To caveat Ben, Stockport 14:09 and Paul, Lancashire 13:54 it is only 12 degrees and a chill breeze.

Yes, heading into the office into an autumnal headwind this morning was something of a slog. Wouldn't want to have to bowl ten overs into it.

Just like that, the covers are coming off.

Maybe, just maybe, we will get to see some cricket in the not-too-distant future.

Jon, Croydon: Pavarotti could play the heavy roller.

I'd have certainly enjoyed his rendition of Supersopperfragilisticexpialidocious.

There's some sweeping up going on out there, which is a bit encouraging! It was quite a shower that and I'm afraid it would have damaged a lot of the good that was done over the hour-and-a-half before that.

Ben, Stockport: Re Paul 13:54 - I also looked up at the Manchester sky today with a wry smile given the weather in London; and whilst we’re at it, come Sunday when it will be raining in Bristol, Manchester will also be sunny. Just a shame it’s been so abysmal when England have been in town this summer…

Paul, Lancashire: It is only a week ago that people were saying that the ECB should not schedule cricket matches at Old Trafford in September because of the weather. Well just to let all you Manchester haters know that today we have beautiful blue sky and a big fat sun, the game would have started at 12:30 had they been playing up here.

Mark, exasperated Hampshire fan: This treatment of John Turner is and absolute joke. If you are not going to play him, then he could have been back at Hampshire and played 3 championships games, 2 on fairly flat pitches and in 1, they even used a kookaburra! If you want to develop fast bowlers, then allow the to play.

It has suddenly become very gloomy at Lord's and although I don't think it's actually raining yet, the main hover cover is back on.

    Hopefully just a precaution.

Alex Carey's been outstanding with the bat for Australia in this series, so it's almost a no-brainer to pick him.
