That's it from us for day one. A day dominated by England for two sessions and they remain on top despite a valiant fightback from South Africa after tea.

You can read Ffion Wynne's report on the action in Bloemfontein here.

Everything is set up for another exciting day tomorrow when, on a pitch that was already spinning late on the first day, Sophie Ecclestone and Charlie Dean will hope to get to work for the tourists.

We'll be back from 07:45 GMT tomorrow morning. Be sure to join us again then!

  2. 'Great to feel switched on and present in the game'published at 15:36 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

England all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "It was great fun out there. I got gifted a few four-balls at the start so got settled pretty quickly. I’m very happy with the day's work.

"I don’t think about the numbers when I am out there so I didn’t realise how quick the century was – the scoreboard doesn’t have balls faced. I got off to a quick start and getting to three figures in around two hours was really pleasing.

"I felt settled out there and was able to get into the flow and not be too disjointed around the breaks, which can happen often. It was great to feel switched on and present in the game.

"It’s always nice to bat with no restrictions in Test cricket and you are only batting against yourself. When you play white ball you are always under pressure to score so to bat without those pressures is really exciting. It's a great format of the game that I enjoy.

"Maia [Bouchier’s] innings was brilliant. She was calm from the outset and took it one ball at a time. She took the game on and was committed and she did such a good job.

"Facing Nonkululeko Mlaba and Sune Luus was hard and they bowled in some really good areas. It will be exciting to see our spinners bowl on this pitch. There was a bit of seam around as well which is good news.

"In my role as a senior bowler, I need to make sure I am checking in with the younger girls and making sure there is a plan for each over.

"We would have taken the score at the start of the day. We are delighted as a side and had partnerships all the way through. We’ll re-cooperate today and recover as well as we can ready for tomorrow."

The reason that Maia Bouchier no longer holds the record for England's fastest century in a women's Test is that 29 minutes later, Nat Sciver-Brunt reached the three figures quicker than anyone ever has in the history of women's Tests.

The England superstar got to her second Test ton from 96 balls and it took an unfortunate run out, as she was backing up, to dismiss her for 128 from 145 balls.

On a more positive note was the debut innings of Maia Bouchier - and what an innings it was!

She batted fluently from the start and went on to reach a memorable hundred from 124 balls. At that point it was the fastest by an England batter in a women's Test.

She eventually fell for 126 from 154 balls. A wonderful knock.

There was some drama in the very first over today, second ball to be precise, as Tammy Beaumont was rapped on the front pad by Marizanne Kapp.

It looked plumb lbw but the umpire was unmoved and as there is no DRS in this match, South Africa had no choice but to accept the decision.

The fact there is no DRS for this match was already a point of contention and this was a clear example of why it is needed so early on in the match.

It's offered a bit of everything today, there were passages of South Africa's game that were impressive.

Maia Bouchier and Nat Sciver-Brunt were brilliant for England. Nat steps up for England time and time again. She is the best in the world by a long way.

  7. Close of play - SA 17-0published at 6 overs

South Africa's openers have done what they set out to do: get through six tricky overs before the close.

An interesting first day all round with brilliant centuries from Maia Bouchier - on debut - and Nat Sciver-Brunt - the fastest ever in a women's Test.

England looked on for a huge total while those two were together but South Africa, led by left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba fought back after tea.

It's all set up very nicely going into day two.

  8. SA 17-0published at 5.3 overs

Three balls bowled and Anneke Bosch is defending solidly so far.

  9. SA 17-0published at 5 overs

    Trail by 378

Anneke Bosch punches the first ball of Lauren Filer's over through the off side for four.

Just a single from the next five and England are going to give Sophie Ecclestone the last over of the day. I like it.

Lauren Bell's best ball in the in-swinger and it has always been the bigger threat. I like the fact that she has the confidence to bowl the away swinger even though it's not quite right yet.

    It means she's not predictable.

  11. SA 12-0published at 4 overs

    Lovely shot from Laura Wolvaardt.

Laura Bell goes fuller, giving the ball every opportunity to swing but this one is overpitched and Wolvaardt drives elegantly through the covers.

Four more next ball, the short boundaries coming into play again as Wolvaardt just digs out a good yorker from Bell but gets a boundary.

Now byes as Amy Jones lets one through with Lauren Filer making an excellent diving stop to save a couple of runs.

  12. SA 2-0published at 3 overs

    Trail by 393

The first two overs weren't great for England and when Lauren Filer is wided for a bouncer gone wrong, the third is in danger of going the same way.

Instead, that mishap seems to get Filer going and twice she draws plays and misses from Anneke Bosch before hitting the splice of the opener's bat with a straighter delivery.

Another bouncer follows but, at this stage, England would want her getting the ball up there, attacking the stumps.

Three overs left in the day.

This is where England really miss Kate Cross and her consistency at the start of the innings. She will try to get the ball nipping back in and also the away swinger so they do lack that steadiness.

Surely England's tactics will be to tempt Wolvaardt and Bosch into going for something. But neither of them should, they just need to stay there until the close.

  15. SA 1-0published at 2 overs

Lauren Bell finds her line as the over goes on and finds some swing in to Anneke Bosch.

But that takes it onto the pads and Bosch flicks to fine leg for South Africa's first run of the match.

Lauren Filer has the pace but she needs to develop her control. She changed her action a couple of winters ago and she has spoken to the bowling coaches now about bowling more cross-seam to get that control.

It is very gloomy in Bloemfontein now but those conditions might help Lauren Bell, who will share the new ball.

But she struggles to get going with the first ball sliding down leg and the second dragged down horribly and well wide of off.

    This will suit South Africa.

  18. SA 0-0published at 1 over

    Trail by 395

After a bit of a loosener to start, Lauren Filer settles in and twice finds the outside half of Laura Wolvaardt's bat.

On each occasion, the ball bounces some way short of gully. Another wayward delivery ends the over but it is a maiden to start.

We're ready to go for the start of the South Africa innings.

Proteas skipper Laura Wolvaardt will face the first ball from England seamer Lauren Filer, Anneke Bosch is at the other end for the home side.

The turning point was when Mlaba got into the rhythm. It was so easy for England to score at the beginning. Once Mlaba got control and found some turn, she started to be effective.

South Africa just didn't get their tactics right from the off.
