I think this is a good batting surface, it's played reasonably well. It's all looking very nice right now for South Africa.

  2. SA 131-1published at 24 overs

Smart batting from South Africa as they work four more singles off that Gulbadin Naib over. Runs are flowing for the Proteas now, and their predicted score is 328 if they carry on at this rate.

    That would take some chasing.

I don't know whether Afghanistan are reading this as a passage that they can get something done with Gulbadin Naib and come out as a less damaged team. They need to put their best out now or the game's going to run away.

They've been second best so far in this contest.

  4. SA 127-1published at 23.2 overs

Temba Bavyma has decided to go up through the gears now.

The first ball of Gulbadin Naib's next over and he pummels the Afghanistan seamer down the ground for four, before a neat jab into the pitch for a drop and run.

Temba Bavuma may be on the slow side but he times it beautifully. On that one, he got to the length and it was all too easy.

  6. SA 122-1published at 23 overs

Temba Bavuma has garnered enough confidence after having a good old look at Rashid Khan to slog sweep him for four through mid-wicket.

He and Ryan Rickleton then spend the remainder of the over cleverly working the Afghanistan leg-spinner into the gaps.

  7. SA 113-1published at 22 overs

Rashid Khan gets a ticking off from the umpire for encroaching on the pitch during his follow through at the end of the over.

Gulbadin Naib is relatively tight as he sticks to fourth or fifth stump line and concedes just three singles.

Ryan Rickleton is unbeaten on 67 off 70 balls while Temba Bavuma is 35 not out off 51 balls.

Every time the ball goes towards a fielder, they've got to be doing the best of their best.

I think Afghanistan have let themselves down on the field.

  10. SA 110-1published at 21 overs

Ryan Rickelton whips a full ball from Rashid Khan off his heels and picks up four after Noor Ahmad misfields in the deep. That's pretty average fielding, if we're being brutally honest.

This partnership is looking very good for South Africa. Afghanistan need a breakthrough or two and it will come form the spinners. Rashid Khan has been pushed away from being able to take wickets, really great strategy from South Africa.

  12. ouch!

    SA 106-1published at 20.3 overs

Ryan Rickelton has smashed the ball back at Rashid Khan and the Afghanistan leg-spinner is hurt after the ball hit on the wrist. Ouch. The physio is on to give him some attention.

These are slightly boneless overs from Afghanistan.

  14. SA 104-1published at 20 overs

We're entering the middle overs where the ball gets softer now. Gulbadin Naib continues for Afghanistan and South Africa reach three figures after Ryan Rickelton punches down the ground for three.

I don't know if it's a strategy form South Africa to absorb the deliveries from Rashid Khan but it should be troubling Afghanistan because they need a wicket desperately.

Rashid Khan plays all around the world in all the big leagues, yet he's still hard to read.

  17. SA 98-1published at 19 overs

A change of ends for Rashid Khan after a relatively tame start from the leggie.

There's a bit more interest from Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who is chirping up from behind the stumps attempting to create a bit of theatre for the spinner out in the middle.

A single apiece for Ryan Rickelton and Temba Bavuma to bookend the over.

It was a brave move to bat first on a surface that no first-class matches have been played on before.

  19. SA 96-1published at 18 overs

Interesting context from Ramiz on the pitch in Karachi. Temba Bavuma said at the toss it was "not a typical Pakistan pitch" but still had enough confidence to make first use of it.

A tight-ish start from Gulbadin Naib, with just three runs conceded of his first six balls.

This pitch has a bit of history. When I was at the PCB, I found out that we didn't have any surfaces with bounce at all. It was decided that we would get clay from Australia, so there's Australian clay (from the Waca) on this pitch. There's been no first-class matches played on this strip since today, the other pitches are locally made. I'm glad to see that experimentation has worked because we are seeing some bounce.
