Summary

  1. SA 51-1published at 11 overs

A short ball from Fazalhaq Farooqi with his third delivery and Ryan Rickelton takes on the hook.

The South Africa opener is unable to make clean contact, though, as he swats it behind square but the ball drops short of the fielder at fine leg.

South Africa are ticking along nicely here.

  3. SA 48-1published at 10.2 overs

Here's how Mohammad Nabi dismissed Tony De Zorzi a little while ago. The South Africa opener will lament that shot.

Meanwhile, Azmat Omarzai replaces Fazalhaq Farooqi and sees his first couple of deliveries prodded and poked for singles.

That over turns it into a decent powerplay for South Africa. The field will spread out a bit now so Bavuma can start to find the gaps and get off the mark. They need to start building a platform here.

  5. SA 46-1published at 10 overs

Ryan Rickelton drives Mohammad Nabi on the up to cover, and the Afghanistan fans in the ground erupt without realising it's a bump ball.

South Africa find it a little trickier to find the gaps off the veteran spinner this time with just one run taken off the over.

  6. SA 45-1published at 9 overs

There was a hint of Kevin Pietersen's flamingo-esque poise in that six from Ryan Rickelton as he lifted his back foot in the air.

Lovely shot from Ryan Rickelton, just trying to manipulate that field. If you can hit the ball around, the powerplay is the time to back yourself and do it. Now the pressure is on the bowler.

Fazalhaq Farooqi really attacks the crease as he sprints in to bowl. He's giving absolutely everything.

However, Ryan Rickelton skips down the pitch and hammers the left-arm quick back over his head for a beefy six. Effortless ball striking.

  9. SA 37-1published at 8 overs

Excellent rotating of the strike from South Africa's batters as they respond to a tight over by working the ball 360. A Ryan Rickleton reverse sweep off Mohammad Nabi for a couple the pick of the shots.

  10. SA 32-1published at 7.2 overs

Mohammad Nabi continues for Afghanistan. His second ball is chipped by Temba Bavuma prompting cries of 'catch it' from the spinner, but there's nobody near it.

Tony De Zorzi, meanwhile, looked a million dollars, until his rather soft dismissal at the hands of Nabi.

  11. SA 31-1published at 7 overs

Ryan Rickelton nudges Fazalhaq Farooqi into the leg side for a single before Temba Bavuma blocks out the remainder of the over.

It's a rather dull and sticky day in Karachi

It's been pretty even so far. Nabi getting a wicket with his first ball, although it was a pretty soft dismissal. I think Afghanistan are slightly on top.

  13. SA 30-1published at 6.3 overs

Hashmat Shaidi continues with left-arm pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi. The ball makes a lovely noise off Ryan Rickelton's bat but he's unable to get the first three balls of the Afghanistan seamer away.

What a difference in the approaches that these two teams have taken. South Africa have gone for pace whereas Afghanistan are going for a trial by spin.

  15. SA 30-1published at 6 overs

A bit of a brain fade from Tony De Zorzi.

Rather more sensibly Temba Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton gently work the wily Mohammad Nabi into the gaps in the remainder of the over.

Tony De Zorzi is going to hate that, what a horrible way to get out. He thought it was shorter than it was and went back in his crease to pull it.

    Mohammad Nabi makes things happen.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 5.1 overs

De Zorzi c Azmatullah b Mohammad Nabi 11 (SA 28-1)

Spin does the trick as Mohammad Nabi strikes with his first ball!

However, Tony De Zorzi very much gives his wicket away here. The South Africa batter tamely chips Nabi to mid-on with a slap off the back foot and Azmatullah Omarzai does well to take the catch with the ball dying on him.

It's been poor from Afghanistan, they are overpitching and bowling short. South Africa are going to continue to punish them for it.

Afghanistan are starting to searching a little here, South Africa are building some momentum.

  20. SA 28-0published at 5 overs

Fazalhaq Farooqi varies his length but the moment he goes a little shorter South Africa cash in.

Ryan Rickelton pulls the first ball of his third over for four, then rides the bounce to cut through point for a consecutive boundaries.

Expect to see Afghanistan's spinners sooner rather than later with the way this is going.
