England are going along at a sedate pace. They have not come flying out the blocks here but some nice shots and they are just waiting for West Indies to bowl into their area.

The ball is slightly slow on this outfield, but Tammy Beaumont still makes it to the boundary. She is off to a great start.

Cherry-Ann Fraser's red locks are bouncing behind her as she rushes in but Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones have started nicely. It's Beaumont's turn drop onto the back foot and bash the ball through mid-wicket.

Right out of the screws from Amy Jones. It has beaten all of the fielders at cover. Lovely timing, and a lovely shot.

  5. Eng 16-0published at 5 overs

Lovely from Amy Jones, driving through a small gap in a packed off side field. I'm not sure Lando Norris could have steered his way through there any better.

  6. Eng 12-0published at 4 overs

    Beaumont 6, Jones 4

The floodlights are beaming down on the players from up high. It feels like the ball should be hooping around but the question is whether West Indies have the quality to make use of that in their attack.

  7. Eng 10-0published at 3 overs

Right on cue Amy Jones gets onto the back foot to slap a ball that wasn't too short through mid-wicket for her first four. You may remember Jones got into all of that trouble at the back end of a chase in the Ashes. It may be this role suits her better.

Amy Jones first opened the batting for England in ODI cricket in 2016 and has done so on 22 occasions since.

She has a marginally better record for England when opening the batting than she does coming in lower down the order.

    Opening: 23 inns, average: 33, strike-rate 89 and seven x 50’s

    Not opening: 59 inns, average 29, strike-rate 80 and seven x 50’s

West Indies seamer Cherry-Ann Fraser lops up a lovely full toss for Tammy Beaumont to drive the first boundary of the day. I'm told West Indies haven't won an ODI against England in England since 1979.

You hope that is not more of what is to come for West Indies. That was an easy stop to make.

  11. Eng 1-0published at 1 over

Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont actually opened together 19 times in ODIs back in the day. They averaged 50 as a pair in that time.

They were also batting together domestically this season with Jones pushed up to the top there too so we really should have seen this coming.

It's a quiet opening over in the Derbyshire gloom from spinner Zaida James.

This is a change at the top of the order with Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones opening together but they have done it before.

Jones has been in the middle order for much of her recent career but has opened 22 times in ODIs, most recently in 2019.

West Indies have something in them and they can well turn up for parts of 50-over cricket games. If anyone saw the men's game yesterday, I imagine it will be quite similar.

The summer may have started with a T20 series but the ODIs will be the focus throughout the summer, given there is a 50-over World Cup in September.

Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge have lost their places from the last ODI in the Ashes. Heather Knight is injured while Sophie Ecclestone and Lauren Filer - the other three players to miss out from Hobart - are making their way back from injuries.

It's a slight surprise to see Amy Jones opening the batting, with Emma Lamb at three. Lamb has been in fine form at the top of the order for Lancashire this season and is back for her first England appearance since 2023.

We already knew there would be no Heather Knight in England's XI today.

Former skipper Knight has been ruled out of international action for the rest of the summer with a hamstring injury and will also miss The Hundred.

The 34-year-old sustained the injury during England's win over West Indies in the third T20 on Monday.

She was limping and struggled to run between the wickets towards the end of her knock, managing to finish unbeaten on 66 in the 17-run win but unable to take the field for the second innings.

A scan on Tuesday revealed a "significant tendon injury to her right hamstring", the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said.

West Indies captain Hayley Matthews: "We would have bowled first. If there is going to be anything in the wicket it might be early on. There is still so much we can take out of a series like this [despite being unable to qualify for the World Cup], experience with so many young girls in the squad."

  18. Postpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 30 May

England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt: "We’re going to have a bat. The wicket looks aright, but it could get a little bit slower so we’ll see how it goes.

"We have nine games before the World Cup so it’s a great chance to look towards that and start forming some plans.

"Linsey Smith and Emily Arlott both debut for us today."

Linsey Smith and Em Arlott are both going to make their England ODI debuts here. I'll have the full XIs for you in a mo but we're told Amy Jones is going to open the batting.

England skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt reckons the pitch might get slower as we go.

She decides to have a bat.
