  1. Pakistan reviewpublished at 84.3 overs

    Pak 324-3

Having whistled one past the outside edge the ball before, Chris Woakes raps Babar Azam on the pad.

It looked good, the umpire raises his finger but Babar Azam calls for the review.

Big moment at the end of day one...

This pitch currently has a PitchViz rating of 1.6 which makes it the joint-second-flattest day one pitch in the ball-tracking era.

PitchViz gives a rating out of 10, the higher the PitchViz number, the harder it is to bat.

  3. Pak 324-3published at 84 overs

Babar Azam drives on the up and finds the gap at extra cover. He doesn't get the timing he did in Gus Atkinson's previous over but he still gets back for three.

It hasn't taken long but the slip cordon to disappear. England are going to try some short stuff late in the day.

Will the Pakistan batters be drawn in? Not so far.

Another boundary. This is the danger of taking a new ball.

  5. Pak 319-3published at 83 overs

    Not in this over.

But Chris Woakes comes close as he draws a leading edge from Saud Shakeel that sends the ball skewing into the off side.

The next delivery is too short and too wide, though, and Shakeel hammers it to the boundary.

Chris Woakes between overs 81-90 in Tests:

At home: 286 balls bowled, 13 wickets (average of 10.8)

Away from home: 248 balls bowled, 0 wickets

Will he break his duck today?

  7. Pak 315-3published at 82 overs

Better from Gus Atkinson after those first couple of deliveries, holding a much tighter line to Babar Azam.

The fifty partnership between Babar and Saud Shakeel is up now, they've successfully got Pakistan back on track after those two quick wickets earlier in the session.

Atkinson has bowled a bad ball to the left and a bad ball to the right. Somewhere in the middle please.

Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope have been busy fielders.

  9. Pak 315-3published at 81.2 overs

Full from Gus Atkinson but little movement and Saud Shakeel drives elegantly through the covers for three.

Very similar next ball, full and driven superbly by Babar Azam this time. Better timing and the ball goes all the way to the fence.

This is the down side of taking the new nut.

  10. new ball

    New ballpublished at 81 overs

    Pak 308-3

And here comes that second new ball.

Gus Atkinson is going to get first use of it as he tries to adds to his two wickets in his first Test away from home.

  11. Pak 308-3published at 81 overs

    Babar 22, Shakeel 23

Another tidy over from Shoaib Bashir with just a single from it.

It feels like we're in something of a holding pattern waiting for the second new ball...

The shadows are lengthening and the sunlight is going, but the floodlights are beaming down which I think means we will get the extra half-an-hour of play.

  13. Pak 307-3published at 80 overs

One from Jack Leach's over and the second new ball is now available.

Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel have batted solidly, clearly wanting to be there when the second new ball comes...

But it seems they will have to wait a little longer. Shoaib Bashir will continue with the old ball.

England by no means are out of this.

The way Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood played this morning was with intent - they had to score to put England on the back-foot.

Just a single from Shoaib Bashir's latest as he strays down the leg side to Saud Shakeel, who gratefully clips the ball behind square.

One over until the second new ball is due and about a minute before we enter the final half hour.

Chris Woakes is loosening up which gives an indication that England will have a go with their seamers with the new ball.

  17. Pak 305-3published at 78 overs

Saud Shakeel gets himself two with a well-executed reverse sweep off Jack Leach.

He adds a single to complete the scoring for the over as we see images of the sun starting to set in Multan and the floodlights beginning to take effect.

Bashir is inviting Babar to take a risk.

He is saying, 'if you want to score runs you have to hit it through a very congested part of the field'.

I think the spinners will have a go with the new ball. I'd be surprised if the seamers had a go.

  19. Pak 302-3published at 77 overs

    Babar 22, Shakeel 17

Good from Shoaib Bashir as he rattles through a maiden to Babar Azam.

The Pakistan right-hander flirts with a ball drifting just down leg, a needlessly risky shot with a leg slip in place, given the most he could get from it is a single.

Three overs until England can think about taking the second new ball.

England on the field have had a good session. They've picked up a couple of wickets and they're looking for another one.
