Summary

  1. drinks break

    Pak 184-1published at 39 overs

    Abdullah 72, Masood 104

Something of a wayward start to the over from Shoaib Bashir and he is worked for a couple of threes - the second of which is checked a number of times to make sure it wasn't one short before the third umpire is satisfied.

The young off-spinner finishes the over well, though, and it's time for drinks.

England will have a couple of minutes to try and come up with a plan to break this stand.

When England beat Pakistan in the dark all those years ago, Marcus Trescothick was the first change bowler in the first innings and Pakistan were 300 odd for 3 at the end of the first day. If we are to learn from history, Pope should throw the ball to Ben Duckett!

Wait a minute, was that lateral movement I just saw?

A real rarity today as Chris Woakes beats the bat of Abdullah Shafique to end the over.

It certainly wasn't extravagant movement but even a couple of centimetres is more than England have had to work with so far.

Shan Masood was under-pressure coming into this Test match. There has been a lot of talk about him, but he's leading from the front.

A fifth Test century for Shan Masood - and his first as captain!

A brilliant knock from the Pakistan skipper, a single off his hip takes him to a 102-ball ton.

Now he has the chance to make it a big one.

Shan Masood with a lovely cover drive. Left-handers make that look so easy.

All his team-mates are on the balcony waiting to clap his 100.

  7. Pak 174-1published at 37.1 overs

Pitched up by Chris Woakes, not an iota of swing and Shan Masood drives handsomely through point for four.

England have banged the ball in short for a good while now, no doubt roughing it up somewhat.

Now it's time to see if that's done the trick and got the ball to reverse. Chris Woakes is coming on to try and find out...

The 150 partnership came up in 33 overs and two balls.

It is only the second time Pakistan have had a 100-plus stand against England in Pakistan.

  10. Pak 170-1published at 37 overs

Shoaib Bashir is back into the attack and it's a good first over.

He is willing to give the ball a bit of flight and finds Abdullah Shafique's inside edge with a nice delivery that dips and turns a fraction from outside off.

When Pakistan's batters have stepped out and used their feet against spin today they have scored 32 runs off seven deliveries. They have hit five fours and two sixes.

  12. Pak 169-1published at 36 overs

    Abdullah 69, Masood 92

It's been one of those days for England.

Banged in short (shock horror) by Gus Atkinson and Abdullah Shafique doesn't get hold of the pull shot at all - but it bounces just short of leg slip, beats him and runs away for four.

Another boundary to end the over, this time a lovely back-foot punch through the covers from Abdullah.

Pakistan are going along very nicely indeed.

Last time we toured Pakistan, both Pakistan openers hit centuries and they were 200-0 (and then 400-3) in their first innings of the first test. Let's give this team some time before criticising the selection.

  14. 6 runs

    Pak 161-1published at 35 overs

Shan Masood is down the track to Jack Leach and belts him high over long off for six.

Sweetly struck to move into the 90s and bring up the 150 partnership with Abdullah Shafique.

Abdullah Shafique is playing his role perfectly, Shan Masood is playing like it's a one man game.

They're both frustrating England in a different way and it's working well for them.

The batters are on top and as a bowling unit you are trying to break that partnership.

Expensive as it may be, I have sympathy with England for using the short ball ploy here. On a pitch as placid as this, it does feel the more likely route to a batting error than bowling length.

England do now have a catching cordon with Gus Atkinson bowling - it's just a ring of four of them in front of square on the leg side waiting for a pull shot.

That becomes three as a leg slip goes in. Ollie Pope keeps tinkering with the tourists doing anything they can to make the batters think and possibly second guess themselves.

So far, to no avail. Both Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood are playing with near-complete control.

Fair play to the guys looking after the sightscreens, which are set for white-ball cricket.

At the end of each over, they have to either hoist or lower a white sheet covering the black screen, then wheel in or out and video advertising board.

  19. Pak 151-1published at 33 overs

Jack Leach races through another over for the cost of just a single.

He's doing a good job of keeping the runs down but in terms of creating chances, much like every England bowler today, there isn't much to talk about.

Shan Masood plays the pull shot well and he's backing himself, but he has to be careful - this is the danger period.

I don't think he's looking for a six, but he still got it.
