I once had to take a pelvic floor strengthening device to South Africa for a post-pregnancy friend that I was meeting in the crowd at a charity one-day match at the Wanderers. Bag searchers didn't bat an eyelid.

We've just had it confirmed that Andy Zaltzman packed Jamie Smith's pads into his hold luggage, rather than wearing them on the plane or in his hand luggage.

I asked earlier this morning about times you've had to transport similarly important cargo.

England are not in control and only bowling three maidens shows that.

Thanks Sam. That was tough going for England.

    Pakistan cruising, England toiling.

It's been a difficult day so far for the tourists.

To recap and then bring you the start of the evening session, it's over to Matthew Henry.

It has been a strange game so far.

England getting the early wicket you were thinking how are Pakistan going to play?

Shan Masood is playing brilliantly and it looks like Pakistan have had a talking to between Test series.

That's tea. A wonderful session for Pakistan with Abdullah Shafique, who is now just six shy of a century, and Shan Masood not giving England a sniff.

A day in the dirt for the tourists is now two-thirds complete and so far, on the flattest of flat pitches, they still only have Gus Atkinson's wicket in the fourth over to show for it.

It has the feel that this is as tough as it gets.

First day, you've only been here five days, you have a rookie attack, flat pitch, lost the toss and it's hot - good luck with that.

Just a single from Jack Leach's over and we'll have time for one more before tea.

It's been another excellent session for Pakistan. Can England manage to take something from it at the last?

Joe Root is trying to be unpredictable by changing the field.

Fast approaching the tea break and England look like a side who can't wait for it to come.

They've tried to change things up but Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique have been unmoved.

  13. Pak 222-1published at 49 overs

A strangled lbw appeal as Jack Leach, bowling round the wicket to Shan Masood, hits the left-hander on the boot.

Might have pitched outside leg, could have been sliding down but, those two fairly vital things aside, a good shout.

It sounds so simple, but England have got to be patient.

The run-rate has come down ever so slightly and England look like they're in more control.

You have Joe Root who is trying to help Ollie Pope.

Why do England fans lose their minds when a team plays well against them? This would have happened if we spent the last month in Pakistan preparing for this with the flat pitch and conditions.

Four singles from Joe Root's first over.

No problems for Pakistan, they just need to keep doing what they're doing and the runs will follow.

When you're looking at the bowling attack of Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad and Mark Wood - they're players who have played so much Test cricket.

When you look at this bowling attack - yes you have Chris Woakes, but his away record is nowhere near his home record.

    It's quite inexperienced.

Another bowling change. It's time for Joe Root and his golden arm...

  19. Pak 217-1published at 47 overs

Jack Leach replaces Shoaib Bashir as England change things up in search of this elusive second wicket.

Pakistan are still showing plenty of intent, even in their running between the wickets as Abdullah Shafique skips down the track, pushes to mid on and sprints through for one.

The home side are doing everything they can to keep the pressure on England.

Very true, Will. The last couple of tours to India they've arguably peaked too soon...
