Summary

  1. NZ 68-2published at 15 overs

Rachin Ravindra in at number four for New Zealand. At 25, he's the future of this side - the only batter in the top six under the age of 32.

He's averaging over 50 in 2024, and gets off the mark with a knock into the covers off Atkinson, who's changed ends, before Williamson takes three down the ground.

Latham's snagged after the drinks break!

The New Zealand captain falls just short of fifty, edging Brydon Carse behind while trying to nurdle into the on side.

A little outside edge and that's enough - Pope takes the ball comfortably.

Latham will be disappointed, he looked well set for a big score. Excellent bowling from Carse, who'd troubled Latham earlier in the over with an lbw shout.

New Zealand - a tougher test than the Ashes overnighter?

Yes, you get the seemingly friendly couple of hours before midnight, but does that lull the over-confident cricket fan into a false sense of security? With that first session under your belt you think you can go the distance, but then realise you've still got to go past 5am.

What's your overnight strategy fellow night-time travellers? New Zealand may be one down, but I'm five down in a ten-pack of chocolate mini-rolls, and we're only one hour in.

Let me know what you're planning.

Christchurch Hospital is just across the road. An air ambulance helicopter has just safely landed off the roof, then flown away over the heads of the players.

  5. NZ 58-1published at 13 overs

Back-to-back threes for Williamson as he tucks Woakes into the on side, bringing up his 1000th run against England.

Latham then turns the ball through backward square for his fourth four, moving into the forties in the process.

One hour down, the players will take drinks.

According to Cricviz's captaincy grid, which looks at which bowler is best suited against each batter, Ben Stokes needs to get himself warmed up. He's the best option against both Tom Latham and Kane Williamson.

If we're talking recent wicketkeeping fashion crimes, surely Jamie Smith's black gloves are worse than pads in trousers, Steph?

Carse opens his over with a lovely ball across the body of Latham, then sees Williamson inside edge onto his pads.

The New Zealand batter then slips over in his crease - it appears to be a bit of a treacherous deck in Christchurch, with the seamers already putting down sawdust in their nascent foot holes.

Williamson then takes three from the final ball of the over to bring up New Zealand's fifty.

Last time Ollie Pope was asked to stand-in as England keeper, in Pakistan in 2022, he didn't have any kit, so had to borrow some off Ben Foakes. It was slightly awkward when Pope was retained ahead of Foakes for the second Test and had to ask for his gear again.

This time Pope was prepared. He's going to straight to the Big Bash after this, where he will keep for Adelaide Strikers.

I'm not a fan of pads in trousers, though.

A third maiden from six for Woakes, sending down a full compliment of dot balls to Kane Williamson.

One run from 20 balls for the New Zealand batter.

  11. NZ 43-1published at 10 overs

A first change for England as Brydon Carse replaces Gus Atkinson.

His third ball flies far over the head of Kane Williamson's for a wide - the New Zealand veteran is not a tall man, but I think that might have passed over two Williamsons stacked on top of one another.

The number three finally picks up a first run off his 14th delivery, knocking into the covers, before Latham's edge flies between slips and gully for four.

    That's a close one!

Woakes, bowling around the wicket to left-hander Latham, sees his penultimate ball fly just wide of the New Zealand's captain's bat as he attempts an expansive drive.

Joe Root at first slip turned away head in hands, he knew the opposition skipper was almost on his way.

Woakes follows up with a half volley and Latham punches it away for four down the ground, the only runs of the over.

This being a pop-up cricket ground, the media are housed in a marquee, just behind where the spectators are sitting at deep extra cover when Atkinson is bowling to right-handers.

It means we're open to whatever is going on in the ground, including one of the best women cricketers in the world casually walking by.

"I'm looking for my dad," says Amelia Kerr.

  14. NZ 33-1published at 8 overs

Latham continues to rattle along, picking up through square off Atkinson, then taking three with a lofty cut shot out towards the point boundary.

He moves to 28 off 33 deliveries, with Williamson still on zero down the other end.

In the last 10 years in Test cricket, Kane Williamson has played no shot to 1293 deliveries from pace bowlers without being dismissed, only Sir Alastair Cook (1420 balls) has left more deliveries without being dismissed in this timeframe. Masters of the leave.

  16. NZ 25-1published at 7 overs

    Soft hands!

Williamson edges behind off Woakes while defending, but the ball drops just short of Ben Duckett at slip.

Three deliveries later and he drops another one just in front of the cordon while trying to turn the ball into the on side.

Another maiden for Woakes and Williamson is yet to score off nine balls.

Hagley Oval, the Cello Basin Reserve and Seddon Park are set join an elite list of sporting venues to be painted live by British artist Andy Brown.

Brown has arrived in New Zealand on his first tour of the country to follow the series between the Black Caps and England.

From Lord’s and Old Trafford in England, to Kensington Oval in Barbados and Yankees Stadium in New York - Brown has travelled the world for the past decade painting live sport in venues.

Brown aims to paint a canvas each day of the upcoming Test series.

  18. NZ 25-1published at 6 overs

    Lovely shot.

Latham continues to farm the strike, and why not when you're in good nick?

He plays a well-timed drive past mid-off four and then jams his bat down on an Atkinson yorker - it runs away for two more on a good outfield here at Christchurch.

I'm fairly certain Jacob Bethell is the first England player to arrive for his Test debut on an electric scooter.

  20. NZ 19-1published at 5 overs

Latham back on strike, he immediately takes two through mid-on.

Woakes then hoops one past his outside edge - "Ooooh, Woakes-y!" comes a sing-song call from behind the stumps.

But Latham strikes back, taking a first four past fine leg and picking up five runs from the following delivery with an initial jab into the covers that Shoaib Bashir contrives to hurl over the slips on the pick-up, seeing the ball run to the boundary.

Woakes finishes off with a couple of handy balls past the bat of Williamson.
