That's your lot for tonight/this morning, folks.

An interesting first day in Christchurch has ended with this first Test very nicely poised.

You can read Stephan Shemilt's report from Hagley Oval here.

The first hour tomorrow/tonight could be crucial and we'll be back to bring you all the action from 21:45 GMT.

Make sure you join us then!

  2. 'Bashir bowled nicely'published at 05:52 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2024

More from New Zealand batter Kane Williamson on TNT Sports about Shoaib Bashir's performance: "I suppose with there predominantly being sideways movement and a bit of bounce, which we often seen on this wicket, most wickets tend to go to guys that extract that, but he bowled nicely and into the wind and got a bit of drop. He's a tall guy and got some bounce too, so he got some nice rewards.

On missing the Test series win in India: "Nice to be back with the team, an incredible effort over there. It was a really proud moment and they fought hard and played really bravely in those conditions that are pretty foreign to us and it was an amazing achievement. It's nice to be back with the team."

They'll definitely be a little frustrated with how the end of the day panned out, Rich.

But given how things looked at tea with New Zealand 193-3 and Kane Williamson going well, England would almost certainly have taken 318-8 at the close.

The tourists managed to peg the Black Caps back every time it seemed they were taking control.

Then just as England put themselves ahead, New Zealand hit back. Just a good day's cricket.

England frustrated by the opposition's lower order.... it's a tale as old as time....

  5. 'Pretty evenly poised after day one'published at 05:45 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2024

New Zealand batter Kane Williamson speaking to TNT Sports: "It was challenging, we certainly had to work hard. We had some really good partnerships there. The ball sort of did a little bit throughout, but as we know the wicket here is generally pretty good, pretty fair for ball and bat."

On his performance: "I guess I was just trying to adjust and we had to run most of runs as well which was a bit of a shame. I think the guys applied themselves really well, it's a pretty balanced day of Test cricket. The team fought hard, both teams did. Both teams got some rewards and it's pretty evenly poised after day one."

Which team is on top?: "I think both teams worked really hard and from our perspective, we were pleased with our partnerships throughout, but you always know that there's going to be opportunities out there and when the ball is in hand and doing a bit.

"There was some fight there and they got some rewards later in the day. I think both teams will be pleased with their efforts and it just depends on how the surface changes throughout in terms of how valuable day one is for either team."

The standout bowler for England - somewhat unexpectedly - was Shoaib Bashir.

Spinners don't tend to have much of an impact at Hagley Oval, certainly not in the first innings of the match but England's 21-year-old offie took 4-69 and got through 20 overs.

    A superb effort from Bashir.

Kane Williamson was the star of the show for New Zealand once again on day one at the Hagley Oval.

He made 93 on his return from injury before falling to Gus Atkinson and is being interviewed on the TV now.

We'll bring you what he's had to say shortly.

  8. Close of play - NZ 319-8published at 83 overs

    Phillips 41, Southee 10

Another nearly moment for Gus Atkinson with this second new ball.

He finds Glenn Phillips' inside edge but the ball falls short of Ollie Pope behind the stumps.

New Zealand sneak a single from it and after Tim Southee plays and misses at the last, stumps is called by the umpires.

A fairly even, entertaining first day in Christchurch.

No scoring shots from Chris Woakes' over as Tim Southee watches the last ball go safely by wide of off stump.

The only run comes from a no-ball, the 11th England have bowled today, and that extra ball means the tourists are really up against it timewise.

Gus Atkinson's over looks like being the last of day one unless he is able to really rattle through it.

  11. NZ 317-8published at 81 overs

Well, Chris Woakes did have the second new ball in his hand but he tossed it to Gus Atkinson.

The Surrey fast bowler has taken two wickets already today and nearly gets a third but Tim Southee's skewed shot into the off side is just out of reach of the diving Ben Stokes at mid off.

Southee pokes the ball out to deep backward point for a single to keep the strike.

As expected there is more nip and bounce with the new ball and now, I promise, it will be Woakes to try and make the most of that.

Bashir is bowling much slower than he did against Pakistan. By the end of that tour, Bashir's average pace was almost 58mph - today he's been down around 52mph.

  13. new ball

New ball takenpublished at 05:18 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2024

No messing around from England. The new ball is taken straightaway and Chris Woakes will get first use of it.

  14. NZ 312-8published at 80 overs

The 300 comes up for New Zealand as Tim Southee swats Brydon Carse's short ball away for four.

The next ball is banged in even shorter and sails over Southee and wicketkeeper Ollie Pope.

Four byes is the signal. Harsh on Pope and fortune for Carse that it wasn't given as wides.

Another boundary ends the over, this time it's Glenn Phillips pulling in front of square and into the gap.

An expensive over but the second new ball is now available.

  15. NZ 299-8published at 79 overs

Big ovation for Tim Southee as he comes out to bat at the start of his last Test series before retirement.

He quickly gets off the mark with a single.

A little under 20 minutes until stumps, there's one more over until the second new ball is available so England could three or four overs with it if they choose.

    Matt Henry holes out!

He is keen to get after Shoaib Bashir but doesn't get hold of it as he tries to clear long on.

Ben Duckett is waiting a couple of yards off the rope and Bashir has his fourth.

Superb from the young England spinner today.

  17. NZ 297-7published at 78 overs

Plenty of short stuff from Brydon Carse but he finishes with a full delivery.

Kept out by Matt Henry and Carse, who looks a little tired, has to bowl an extra delivery after over-stepping.

If you're just waking up for the 5am alarm, welcome. While you wait for the car to defrost allow us to recap the day:

    • England won the toss and put New Zealand in to bat. Gus Atkinson removed Devon Conway cheaply with a superb return catch.
    • However, that brought Kane Williamson to the crease, who batted superbly for 93 before inexplicably cutting a short ball straight to point.
    • Rachin Ravindra (34), Daryl Mitchell (19) and Tom Blundell (17) also gave their wickets away in a New Zealand batting performance which has been puzzling.
    • Shoaib Bashir has taken three wickets, with two each for Brydon Carse and Atkinson.

Who's on top? England - but Glenn Phillips and Matt Henry's partnership means it's not quite as clear cut as it was half an hour ago.

  19. NZ 296-7published at 77 overs

Two boundaries in the over for Glenn Phillips, the second of them a sizzling drive through the covers.

He got himself in a tangle next ball and the review showed just how far away he was from the getting bat on it.

Brydon Carse is coming on with three overs until the second new ball becomes available.

  20. Not outpublished at 76.4 overs

    NZ 296-7

Clear gap between bat and ball.

I've got no idea what the England fielders heard but Glenn Phillips was nowhere near that.

Clicky bat handle? Another poor review.
