Three of Pope's seven centuries have come in the first Test, if you count the one-off match v Ireland as a "series" - Rawalpindi 2022, Lord's 2023, Hyderabad 2024.

  4. Eng 171-4published at 40 overs

Short from Will O'Rourke and once again Ollie Pope rides the bounce and flashes at it, cutting on the up behind square.

Next ball he drives stylishly through the covers for three more to bring up an unbroken century stand with Harry Brook for the fifth wicket - the highest partnership of the match so far.

Far from chanceless, this has been a streaky knock so far from Ollie Pope - 19% false shots is the fourth highest he's recorded in a Test fifty. That's surprising given that for Pope, it's not been a particularly aggressive knock - the majority of his fifties have had a higher attacking shot percentage than today's 34%.

  6. 50 runs

Half-century for Popepublished at 39.1 overs

Ollie Pope works the first ball of Will O'Rouke's into the on side for a single into to bring up his fifty.

It has come off 59 balls.

  7. Eng 162-4published at 39 overs

Ollie Pope is closing in on a half-century of his own.

Third ball of Matt Henry's over and he is struck on the front pad by one which climbs into him from and the Kiwi seamer appeals.

Umpire Ahsan Raza is not interested, though. No review from Tom Latham and the ball-tracking shows it would have been umpire's call.

This Thanksgiving, I am grateful for some dodgy New Zealand catching which has kept England in the game.

  9. 50 runs

Fifty for Brookpublished at 37.5 overs

A half-century for Harry Brook off 65 balls and he brings it up with a maximum.

Banged in short by Will O'Rourke and Brook swivels on his heels and pulls it over the fence and on to the grass banking for six.

  10. Eng 151-4published at 37 overs

Ollie Pope's heart would have been in his mouth as he guides a delivery from Matt Henry between second slip and gully. There's no fielder at third so he picks up four.

    Slightly streaky from England's vice-captain.

Nathan Smith carefully positions his fingers on the seam of the ball.

A short-pitched delivery to begin his ninth over is anticipated by Ollie Pope and he clinically pulls it square to the fence for four.

A couple of balls later and Pope leans into one on his knee and flicks it over Rachin Ravindra at mid-wicket for another boundary.

Runs starting to flow a little easier, now. Pope is unbeaten on 42 while Harry Brook is 45 not out. This partnership is worth 76.

The England trumpeter has just played the first few notes of the Great Escape as Harry Brook and Ollie Pope negotiate another tricky over from Matt Henry.

    England trail by 213 now.

Please Hayley don't jinx Pope. He's going along nicely. Leave him be... ssshhhh

New Zealand's catching, traditionally a strong suit, has let them down today.

Harry Brook has been dropped twice. Ben Duckett was also put down earlier, as well.

There are glasses on the ground, caps on the ground, the ball is in the hand but it's not out.

    Another chance goes begging.

  16. dropped catch

Tom Latham spills Harry Brook off Nathan Smith at first slip!

The England batter unfurls a booming drive, and the ball flies through to the New Zealand skipper who parries it into the air above his head.

Tim Southee attempts to gather it at the second attempt but is not able to get under it.

A second escape for Brook after he was dropped on 18 earlier.

    Be inclined to agree, Hayley.

Tim Southee and Harry Brook have a little chat at the end of the former's over. Both men are smiling so it seems to be of the good-natured variety.

Say it quietly, but Pope at six is starting to feel right.

  19. Eng 122-4published at 32 overs

I'm slowly sipping the last entrails of a warm fruit cordial drink as Nathan Smith starts a new spell. His second ball, angled in, does Harry Brook for pace somewhat and he rather awkwardly deflects it into his inner thigh.

Brook and Ollie Pope both pick up a single apiece before the former opens the face and uses the pace of Smith's final delivery to guide it for four through the vacant third region.

  20. Eng 116-4published at 31 overs

The Hagley Oval is now bathed in sunshine, but there's no sense the rays have thrown a blanket of tranquillity over England's batting just yet.

Harry Brooks transfers his weight to the back foot and cuts Tim Southee for four, but watching nervously as a red blur flashes just past the diving Glenn Phillips in the gully region.
