    Caught in the deep!

Brydon Carse bangs it in short with his first ball of the day and is immediately rewarded.

Tim Southee goes after it on the pull, gets a big top-edge as he tries to drag it from outside off and Gus Atkinson takes the catch 10 yards off the boundary cushion.

A third wicket for Carse and England are one away from wrapping up the innings.

  2. NZ 325-8published at 84 overs

This is just the fourth over with the second new ball for England and Chris Woakes gets it to do plenty to force a play and a miss from Tim Southee.

Swing. England's bowlers - and New Zealand's for that matter - will be happy to see that.

But Southee responds by advancing and slapping the next ball through mid-on for four.

Right then, the players have made their way to the middle and we're moments away from the start of day two.

Chris Woakes is set to ball the first over of the day for England with Glenn Phillips and Tim Southee at the crease for New Zealand.

Cooler and more cloudy at Hagley today, but it feels like the grass banks are even busier. There were spectators queuing up outside not long after 8am. The breeze has certainly died down and changed direction.

The one thing England want to do is avoid another 40 runs being added and I think the key wicket they will want this morning is Glenn Phillips, who bludgeoned a few yesterday.

Tim Southee can sometimes hit a long ball, but sometimes he doesn't! If you are going to try to add these precious runs you need some support.

  6. 'Nice pitch to bat on'published at 21:56 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2024

England fast bowler Brydon Carse: "Obviously yesterday it was completely different conditions to what we faced in Pakistan.

"There was a lot more carry and bounce so there were definitely periods of yesterday where I felt I was in the game and the other seamers were as well.

"The pitch? Early on it felt like there were was a little bit more tennis ball bounce and we could maybe have been a touch fuller. But I think throughout the day the seamers came back and stuck to certain plans that we wanted to.

"There was that consistent carry throughout day but as we saw at the end of the day going forward in this game it will be a nice pitch to bat on."

Apparently it is slightly cooler in Christchurch than it was yesterday, albeit the blustery wind that picked up throughout the day has turned into a gentle breeze.

Is that good news for batters or bowlers? We'll find out soon enough.

  8. 'England will be the happier of the two teams'published at 21:53 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2024

It was a good, balanced day of Test cricket. A fair day when you look at the pitch. There’s something in it for everyone. I was surprised Bashir picked up the four wickets, 4-69 is an absolute bonus for England because you look at that wicket at the start of day one, you’d find a lot of green, live grass that did change colour as the day went on.

You thought the seamers, Carse and Woakes, would have done the damage but they were four bonus wickets.

England will be the happier of the two teams actually on that day. I know you bowl first you expect to bowl a side out for probably less than 319 but we know this wicket is a good cricket wicket. Anything in it was going to be in the first two hours.

I thought England bowled okay, not the best but okay and then dragged it back late in the day. New Zealand will be thinking we had an opportunity after getting through that first session, to get a bigger score in the first innings.

  9. 'England saved day one, spearheaded by Bashir'published at 21:50 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2024

England saved the day in that last session taking five wickets from a rather tricky situation from the first two sessions where New Zealand made it to 193-3.

It was looking somewhat ominous after winning the toss and electing to bowl first. Those five wickets, spearheaded by Shoaib Bashir, an unlikely hero in the first day of this Test match in that last session, has left it pretty much honours even at the end of day one.

Good evening and thanks for joining us ahead of the second day of this first Test between New Zealand and England.

It's all very nicely poised going into the morning of day two with the home side set to resume on 319-8 and the dangerous Glenn Phillips unbeaten on 41.

Kane Williamson top-scored for the Black Caps on day one on his return from injury, making 93, while off-spinner Shoaib Bashir was, somewhat surprisingly given the conditions, the pick of the England bowlers with 4-69.

Which team, if any, will be able to move into the ascendancy today?
