Once this new ball stops swinging, Alyssa Healy will be keen to get Alana King into the attack - both Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont have been dismissed by her three times, both averaging just six against her.

England have built a solid total considering the difficult batting conditions.

Batting gets easier the longer you are in the middle so Australia don't want to give these two world-class players too long to get into their stride.

BBC Weather tells me it's 25 degrees Celsius in Sydney today (77 for those of you work in Fahrenheit) but it looks hotter than that. A young lad was eating a chocolate ice-cream and it was dribbling all down the cone - a more accurate gauge of the heat, I'm sure you'll agree.

Tammy Beaumont sees off five dots from Kim Garth then throws the kitchen sink at the final ball of the over which races away for four down the ground.

Annabel Sutherland is a serious player. She has got it all – from a batting point of view she comes in at four. She’s not been as settled in the Australia side until recently, when she has performed really well with the bat. Her bowling is useful too, especially for the Test match.

  5. Eng 41-1published at 9 overs

A beamer from Annabel Sutherland early in her over, which Tammy Beaumont manages to swat away. The Aussie raises a hand of apology, and a grinning Beaumont gives her a friendly tap on the back after completing a single.

Two balls later and Heather Knight squirts a full delivery through point for four.

Kim Garth's body language is saying that she is slightly frustrated. She can't seem to grab that outside edge.

It's a game within a game between herself and Heather Knight at the moment and Alyssa Healy may give Garth more overs if she continues to bowl with this intensity.

  7. Eng 33-1published at 8 overs

Kim Garth ha the bit between her teeth here, probing away outside the off stump of Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont.

Knight straight drives the final ball of Garth's over, but the Aussie seamer manages to dive to get stop it.

A change of bowling now, as Annabel Sutherland comes into the attack.

One thing England lacked in that T20 World Cup is that ruthless mindset to really hold it when the pressure hit.

That is the question. There is nowhere worse to go and lose the ability to hold that pressure.

This is a big test for those senior players – Heather Knight, Tammy Beaumont, Danni Wyatt-Hodge - those players that have been around for a long time, they are really going to have to hold it together and get England over the line.

I want to see them start strong, more leaders step up and really hold it together. It will be a tough series.

Australia will want to take advantage of the swinging ball early on. Everyone will be expecting movement first thing and then it should flatten out throughout the day.

Kim Garth has bowled incredibly well so far, she may get a few more overs whilst that swing is still on offer.

  10. Eng 31-1published at 7 overs

Typically punchy from the diminutive Tammy Beaumont, who square drives Megan Schutt's second ball for four through the covers.

A couple of balls later and Schutt is a fraction too full and is punished again - driven for four by Heather Knight.

It is interesting that Australia decided not to open with Darcie Brown for these first overs.

Darcie can be a little bit wayward whereas Megan Schutt and Kim Garth are more reliable which seems to be paying off for Australia at the moment.

  12. Eng 22-1published at 6 overs

A bit of fortune for Heather Knight as she goes at a delivery from Kim Garth with hard hands, and the ball flies between the slip cordon and gully region for four.

Kim Garth is so dangerous in the first 10 overs. In the last two years, she's taken 16 new ball wickets for Australia in ODI cricket - nobody has more.

  14. Eng 16-1published at 4.3 overs

Short and wide from Megan Schutt and England captain Heather Knight makes no mistake, ruthlessly cutting it to the boundary for four.

Nice way to get off the mark.

A lovely piece of bowling from Kim Garth. There was a hint of shape, just enough movement and Alyssa Healy did the rest easily.

Maia Bouchier went back into her crease, almost what you would do in T20 cricket. She had to play the shot, there was no way she could have left it.

This will settle Alyssa Healy's nerves after coming back from injury; it was a regulation catch for her.

This time Maia Bouchier does have to go after being squared up.

It's a peach of a delivery from Kim Garth, drawing the England opener into a tentative defensive prod before swinging away to take the edge.

Alyssa Healy does the rest behind the stumps.

  18. Eng 11-0published at 3.3 overs

Shotttt! After 16 dot balls for England, Maia Bouchier elegantly, and effortlessly, chips Kim Garth for four over mid-on.

Must be honest, I'm quite intrigued as to how that old London Routemaster bus they've been using to promote the Women's Ashes wound up all the way down in Sydney.

Did Henry Blofeld drive it there on a road trip in the seventies?

  20. Eng 7-0published at 3 overs

Megan Schutt continues to find some movement through the air with her in-duckers. A cautious start from Tammy Beaumont, who is happy to see off another maiden over.
