Alice Capsey dropping Ellyse Perry was not that costly in runs but it set the tone. If you have Lauren Filer getting Phoebe Litchfield then Capsey holds that catch a few balls later you think 'hey, we are on top in the game and driving it forward'. But instead you lose that momentum. England just have to be sharper because there is no room for weakness, especially over in Australia. There's enough to work with but they'll have to sharpen up.

Alana King hits the winning runs for Australia

Australia spin bowler Alana King: “We were so pleased to have a great start. We knew there was little bit in the wicket. Our bowlers did really well from the off extracting as much swing as possible. Ash [Gardner] and I had the chance to bowl some spin and it was great to get some early rewards.

“We knew the outfield was running a lot more quickly than it has been, but I’m glad Alyssa [Healy] made the decision to bowl first and it paid off.

“We had some open conversations before this series about how to get the best out of each other. The way we are playing is aggressive cricket and we’re playing it our way. There’s still things to touch up on; a couple of wickets in the middle order was disappointing to lose as we pride ourselves on having the best middle order, but that’s me being critical!

“We wanted to come and throw the first punch and we have done that today. We are feeling really confident going into the rest of the games.”

Was this an England side who were undercooked? I think so. They haven't had the ideal prep, but they can't do anything about the weather. I don't think they have trained outdoors that much and had that washout in the warm-up match. But they have just come out of a multi-format series in South Africa so that was the ideal prep for this Ashes series.

They'll be disappointed but won't use that as an excuse. Heather Knight is trying to portray positive messages to her team. England weren't terrible but just slightly off the mark in all three facets. They didn't get enough runs on the board. The wicket definitely got better so Australia got the better side of the toss. I think 250 was probably par.

Lauren Bell bowled beautifully but they relieved the pressure with too many loose balls. It wasn't terrible from England but not a sharp as Australia today.

The dropped catches were not the main reason England lost but they remain a worrying trend.

They dropped five catches in going out of the T20 World Cup before Christmas.

Today another two went down, two which should have been taken.

'Huge' moment for England as Filer removes Litchfield

Heather Knight is being positive because it's a long series rather than actually the performance. Especially when a team is bowled out with seven or eight overs to spare in a 50-over match and then it's chased down.

England will reflect on that innings but the good thing was they didn't give up with the ball. There was some fight, even if the dropped catches caused some problems. England didn't get the warm-up preparation they would have wanted with the rained off warm-up, they didn't start strong, but there's enough in there to take some momentum. You have to be positive but there's some work to do.

    Australian captain Healy reaches 50

Australia captain Alyssa Healy: "I'm pretty happy. I think always some areas to work on but to take the two points into the Junction Oval is pleasing. I thought we could have been more clinical with the bat at the end, but having said that it was the kind of wicket where you never felt in so we did well to chase that down. We could have put the foot down and tried to chase that quicker.

"Personally I was happy to spend time in the middle after the past few months. It's nice to contribute the way I did. Although it would have been beneficial to have been out there at the back end to finish it off. It's good to spend some time at the crease and get some confidence."

  9. 'Need to be a bit more ruthless'published at 06:04 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

England captain Heather Knight: “I was pleased with the performance. We felt like we were in the game, we just needed to grab a few more wickets at the end. It was a bad toss to lose.

"I was pleased with how the bowlers went about it. Lauren Bell was outstanding. It’s the best I have seen her bowl. It felt like we were really close - we just need to sharpen up a few things before the next game.

"We won’t change too much. I don’t think we are too far away. With the bat some of us, including myself, didn’t go on to score big or create any partnerships. We need to be a bit more ruthless to post a big score on the board. If we get 20 more runs or so, we are really in the game next time.”

Ashleigh Gardner stamps her authority with 'massive' six

Player of the match Ash Gardner: "It's an honour and privilege to pull on this shirt every time and to play the amount of games I have for my country, and to contribute in those, and take wickets. It's so special today with a sold out crowd and in my home town then to start the Ashes the way we wanted to and get the two points early is pleasing.

"The conditions were pretty tricky to be honest. North Sydney is normally pretty flat with lots of runs scored but there was a a bit in it for the bowlers which is pleasing, being a bowler myself then having to counteract that with the bat. It's a cliche but I tried to keep the stumps in play with a bit of natural variation, with ones that turn and ones that didn't. It's always nice to get wickets for the team."

Had things gone the other way we'd have looked back on this as the crucial moment.

Megan Schutt dismissed Maia Bouchier in the first over of the match but had overstepped.

Fortunately for her the result means we won't look back on it as one of those Ashes openers we remember.

In the end England just didn't have enough runs. Even had they took those two dropped chances they may have been short.

They were bowled out for 204 but the slide started with the loss of captain Heather Knight. They were 92-2 before she top-edged a sweep to deep mid-wicket.

When Nat Sciver-Brunt followed in similar fashion two overs later, England were always going to be in trouble.

A clinical performance from Australia. England struggled to build partnerships, not one half-century from an England player.

There are still positives for England, they just need to be a bit more tidy and cleaner in the field.

Need three more runs to win

The bowling isn't why England have lost this match. The two dropped catches obviously haven't helped but they aren't to blame either.
