I wish England fans would learn to enjoy a really great match, it’s very rare to be able to see England do well in a sport so please let’s enjoy it.

Finally, New Zealand get a run off Chris Woakes in this spell - but it comes from a good ball.

Angled in at the stumps from Woakes, Daryl Mitchell prods forward and gets an inside edge onto his thigh pad with the ball rolling to square leg.

Four more next ball, Tom Blundell opening the face, it's still slightly edgy, but gets it between slips and gully to the boundary.

Good, tidy over from Shoaib Bashir.

Everyone has settled into the session now and it's clear what we're going to see.

New Zealand will be patient and just look to bat and bat and bat, they're in no rush, while England are going to test that patience with some disciplined bowling.

    Who will blink first?

Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell have scored 793 runs in their partnerships against England including four century partnerships. Both are the most by any New Zealand pair against England in Test history.

Back-to-back maidens to start the spell from Chris Woakes.

This time it's Tom Blundell on strike as the England seamer probes around off stump.

Nothing this time but keep the ball there long enough and good things tend to happen.

  6. NZ 85-4published at 23 overs

    Target 583

Excitement from the England fielders as Tom Blundell turns the ball away square off Shoaib Bashir.

It was in the air but well wide of Joe Root at short leg.

A single from Daryl Mitchell means New Zealand need a mere 499 to win... make that 498 as Blundell pushes another.

  7. NZ 82-4published at 22 overs

    Target 583

Change of bowling for England with Chris Woakes on to replace Brydon Carse.

It's a very tidy start. The movement he got with the new ball has gone but the accuracy remains as he gets through a maiden to Daryl Mitchell.

  8. NZ 82-4published at 21 overs

    Target 583

Rehan Ahmed, on as sub fielder for Harry Brook, is called into action as Tom Blundell punches through extra cover.

Ahmed gets around to prevent a boundary but a mishap nearly ends with him throwing the ball over the rope himself.

Not quite and Ahmed is able to smile about it as he offers an apology to bowler Shoaib Bashir.

I remember it well, Theo, and I'm sure England will too. They'll also remember they won that series 3-0.

For now, though, Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell are managing to keep England at bay with two coming from Brydon Carse's over.

Hey remember that 2022 series when England couldn't get Mitchell and Blundell out? (I'm hoping by mentioning it I can ensure it doesn't happen again)

There is some turn there for Shoaib Bashir and he so nearly gets the dream off-spinner's dismissal.

Floated up, a hint of drift away from the right-hander and then turning back through the gate as the batter drives.

Tom Blundell is the aforementioned batter relieved that the ball just missed off stump.

  12. NZ 72-4published at 18 overs

Just one from Brydon Carse's latest as a back-of-a-length delivery whistles past Tom Blundell's bat.

The New Zealand keeper withdraws the bat late but he definitely played at it.

I’m feeling a bit ripped off - I’ve travelled half way round the world to escape wet and windy, and this is what we get.

Good start from Shoaib Bashir and a couple of encouraging moments.

Firstly, Daryl Mitchell pushes at a ball and nearly pops it up into the leg side.

Bashir then gets one to turn and beat Mitchell on the inside edge before it balloons up off the pad.

Time for some spin as Shoaib Bashir is on to bowl for the first time in the match.

Can the tall off-spinner get some bounce on this track?

    Some response from Tom Blundell.

Banged in short by Brydon Carse and Blundell pulls it away high over fine leg.

It should be a third wicket for Brydon Carse.

Length ball, wide of off and Tom Blundell drives at it. No foot movement, he just throws his hands at it and gets a very healthy edge.

The ball flies to third slip where Jacob Bethell, in there with Harry Brook off the field, goes to his left but the ball bursts through.

    Four rather than a wicket.

The wind is really picking up in Wellington and twice in the over, Gus Atkinson stops in his run-up as he is blown off course.

Not the easiest conditions for the bowlers but just a single from the over.

  19. Postpublished at 00:37 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December

    Excellent. Here come the players.

Gus Atkinson has five balls left in the over he started before the rain came on the stroke of lunch.

He'll be bowling to Daryl Mitchell, with Tom Blundell at the other end for New Zealand.

England have six wickets to get, the Black Caps need a highly unlikely 524 more runs to win.

  20. Rain has stopped in Wellingtonpublished at 00:33 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December

Good news from the Basin Reserve where the rain has stopped, the covers are off and it looks positive in terms of starting promptly after lunch.
