All the excitement in that over rather got in the way of what a hero Russ is. (Well, potentially, it's not 6pm in Queenstown yet.)

But a very generous offer and I know our Matt Henry is extremely grateful.

Shoaib Bashir has the last laugh!

After Glenn Phillips followed up his six with a four over the leg side, Bashir gets one in fuller and quicker.

The ball skids on and makes a mess of Phillips' stumps as he played back.

    What a shot that is!

Tossed up by Shoaib Bashir and Glenn Phillips climbs into it, hammering it flat over extra cover for six.

I’m in Queenstown. Got to pick the kids up from a Christmas show at 6, could swing by then if he still needs help.

Four more for Tom Blundell, again carved through backward point as Chris Woakes offers width.

After a fairly slow hour after lunch, things seem to be picking up again.

Speaking of picking up, Matt Henry may have found a way out of his dilemma in Queenstown...

  6. 50 runs

50 for Tom Blundellpublished at 33.2 overs

    NZ 125-5

Dropped on nought, Tom Blundell has made the most of his luck and reaches fifty with a boundary.

A fighting knock with New Zealand in a dire situation.

  7. NZ 121-5published at 33 overs

    Target 583

Turn and bounce for Shoaib Bashir to end the over but Glenn Phillips pays it well.

England won't mind seeing Tom Blundell playing a few shots either. They'll expect chance to follow.

  8. 6 runs

    NZ 120-5published at 32.4 overs

    Target 583

Tom Blundell goes again - and this time launches the ball high over long on for six!

He really got hold of that one.

  9. NZ 114-5published at 32.1 overs

    Target 583

Change of approach from New Zealand? Maybe.

Tom Blundell is down the track and thumps the ball back over Shoaib Bashir's head for four.

Clone Carse and Atkinson thrice each and England may not yield a run in Test cricket for the next decade.

  11. NZ 110-5published at 32 overs

    Target 583

Glenn Phillips is the new batter for New Zealand and he gets a good one first up from Gus Atkinson.

A bit of extra bounce from back of a length but Phillips does well to get on top of it.

Having done that, he gets off the mark with a nice stroke through backward point for four.

    Breakthrough!

Gus Atkinson does it again for England and it's a superb piece of bowling.

Angled in, pitching on off stump and full enough to bring Daryl Mitchell forward. Then a fraction of movement away to find the edge.

Mitchell just shrugs as he walks off, clearly he feels there wasn't much more he could have done there.

Gus Atkinson is back to bowl the first over after drinks.

  14. drinks break

    NZ 106-4published at 31 overs

    Target 583

Shoaib Bashir rattles through another over, just a couple from it, and it's time for drinks.

Stubborn resistance from Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell, who was dropped before he got off the mark, since lunch.

Meanwhile, we await news from BBC stalwart Matt Henry in a van 30 miles outside of Queenstown.

We're a way off thinking about this at the moment, but here are England's biggest Test wins by runs (excluding follow-ons):

    • 675 runs v Australia, Brisbane 1928
    • 354 runs v Pakistan, Nottingham 2010
    • 347 runs v Australia, Lord's 2013
    • 338 runs v Australia, Adelaide 1933
    • 330 runs v Pakistan, Manchester 2016

Quite the conundrum for young(ish) Matt. Anyone reading from near Queenstown who can ferry some petrol to him if he goes for it but doesn't quite make it?

OK, I have a news for you. Matt Henry, our one, not the New Zealand bowler, is on holiday here at the moment. The van he and his wife Laura are diving around is low on fuel, but the only petrol station within range has lost power. They are about 30 miles from Queenstown. I reckon they can make it. He says they need to sit it out.

  18. NZ 101-4published at 29 overs

Applause from the Basin Reserve crowd as New Zealand reach three figures.

Definitely a somewhat ironic applause given the situation the Black Caps find themselves in.

Still, they've not lost a wicket since lunch so are at least making England work for it.

    Where did that come from?!

Slightly back of a length from Chris Woakes and the ball just takes off as it moves away from Tom Blundell.

Thankfully for the batter, it is just wide enough he is shaping to leave anyway.

Signs that there is still some life in this pitch, though. Maiden.

It's New Zealand who make the first move in this battle of patience as Tom Blundell skips down the track to Shoaib Bashir.

He plays a firm lofted drive over the bowler's head, one bounce for four.
