It's a bedraggled Pakistan team out there and they can't hope for a declaration from England either.

There's no mercy in sight here for them. They'll have to deal with another three hours of this, at least.

Harry Brook is fast approaching his double century now as he scores eight of the 10 runs off Salman Ali Agha in the over.

His 17th boundary accounts for half of them as the Yorkshireman gave himself room before rifling the ball through the covers.

England are enjoying themselves. Pakistan are not.

Saim Ayub into the attack now and you get the sense Pakistan are just going through the motions a bit, almost waiting for an England declaration (that is surely still quite a way off) rather than force the issue themselves.

You've got to wonder how much Shaheen Afridi appreciates the huge grin from Harry Brook after he misses with an attempted ramp.

Shaheen and Muhammad Rizwan were discussing to review for a catch behind but Brook knew full well he hadn't hit it.

England just continue to tick along nicely. Well, they're going at nearly five an over and likely to accelerate before too long so more than ticking along really.

Joe Root just keeps scoring runs. Having begun on 176 not out, Joe Root has progressed to his sixth Test double century and England are now in the lead.

Painfully for Pakistan Root was dropped by Babar Azam at mid-wicket on 186. It was a sitter and the only real chance Pakistan have created.

Harry Brook is still there too. He is closing on his first Test double hundred.

The most dramatic moment may have been Jonathan Agnew playing Jerusalem on a euphonium with the England fans at the start of the day.

157 of Joe Root’s runs have come via running between the wickets. That’s his most in an innings, going past the 150 he ran against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2021 (he scored a total of 228 runs in that innings).

Time for drinks and, as tough as things have been for Pakistan, Muhammad Rizwan is still having fun.

He throws the ball up in mock celebration after Harry Brook misses with a sweep as Salman Ali Agha continues to fire the ball down leg.

But the throw is a little wayward, Rizwan can't get to the ball as it loops over Brook's head and ends up just giving the England man a hug.

It's not great to watch bowling like this, really. He's just serving up runs.

  14. Eng 566-3published at 115.2 overs

    Brook 174, Root 216

Another close call as Joe Root misses attempting a very fine sweep and nearly feathers behind.

The noise was batting hitting ground rather than ball, though.

He tries the same shot next ball and this time he connects, whacking Salman Ali Agha fine to the fence.

  15. Eng 562-3published at 115 overs

Good bouncer to end the over from Aamer Jamal and Harry Brook gets himself in a bit of a tangle.

For a moment it looked like the England right-hander might have gloved it behind.

But there's no reaction from bowler or wicketkeeper. Nothing but fresh air.

This majestic partnership is helping make the early newborn mornings a bit more palatable. Birth unregistered atm, I’m sure baby Chloe would appreciate a Joe Root middle name though.

It is all just far too easy for England at the moment.

Five singles from Salman Ali Agha's over, the tourists have a first-innings lead.

Perhaps the best thing you can say for Pakistan in the context of the game is that that occasional indifferent bounce we saw in the open overs of the day has not continued.

Of course, that could just be Joe Root and Harry Brook being about as well set as it's possible to be and easily dealing with any slight variable bounce.

It's the second time Joe Root and Harry Brook have shared a 300-run partnership. They put on 302 against New Zealand in Wellington in February of last year.

They are the first England pair to have two 200-run stands together and the ninth pair from any country.

The scores are level. England are only three down and are in a strong position. It's bad news if you are a Pakistan player.

    Scores are level

A pair of very nice drives in the over from Joe Root.

The first goes just in front of square and brings him two, the next is through extra and is flicked back just behind the boundary cushion.

That brings three and the scores are level.
