    Of course.

The ball after the drop, it is almost inevitable that there will be a boundary.

It's another glorious cover drive from Joe Root. He very quickly put that drop behind him. Can Pakistan do the same?

Fatigued? Yes. Tired? Yes. But that's a waste from Babar Azam who's saying he didn't pick it up or something.

    Oh dear, oh dear.

Pakistan do bowl a bouncer. It's Naseem Shah who bowls it and Joe Root takes it on.

He makes decent enough contact but the ball goes straight to Babar Azam at mid-wicket, only for the former skipper to drop a dolly.

    Anguish for Naseem and Pakistan.

I was surprised Pakistan didn't go to the bouncer theory yesterday. When England face it they take it on. Pakistan tried it for one over.

After the boundary through the leg side, Joe Root drives handsomely through the off next ball but has to settle for two as the fielder gallops round to cut it off.

England are just 50 runs off first-innings parity and will be eyeing a big lead given the wickets they still have in hand.

  8. Eng 504-3published at 103.3 overs

It's been said an awful lot in the past 24 hours but Joe Root really is a class act.

He gets England's first boundary of the day with a superbly-timed flick through mid-wicket off Shaheen Afridi.

    Effortless.

I wonder when was the last time England reached 500 for the loss of just three wickets. It's a significant achievement even on a flat wicket.

Naseem Shah starts from the other end for Pakistan and seven runs from the over take England up to 500.

Joe Root is up and running for the day, showing just how much a good night's sleep can do, as he sprints back for two after dabbing down to third.

A single to end the over takes him to 180.

I chatted to Brendon McCullum this morning and he said he was so proud of what he saw over the bowling innings. They never threw the towel in. They were sloppy for the last 20 minutes but that wasn't through the lack of trying. At times yesterday Pakistan threw in the white flag.

Just the one run from the first over of the day and maybe, just maybe, signs of life in the pitch.

Shaheen Afridi gets one to jump up a bit at Joe Root and carry through at a good height to Muhammad Rizwan behind the stumps.

What's going on here? We've got Jerusalem. We've got no Simon Finch, the trumpeter. But we've got someone playing euphonium on the far side of the ground. It's Jonathan Agnew!

England are away first ball as Harry Brook opens the face and guides it down to deep third for a single.

And what's this? Is that...? Yes, it's BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew playing his euphonium to lead the England fans in a rendition of Jerusalem!

Any chance that this pitch will have deteriorated even a little bit?

We're about to find out. The players are in the middle with Shaheen Afridi ready to bowl the first ball of day four to Harry Brook.

It is a poor pitch for Test cricket. It is not a spectacle we have watched in the past few days. What it might end up doing is producing an entertaining last day and a half.

Ben Stokes has been walking laps of the Multan Stadium in the run-up to this fourth day, a lion pawing at the ground. Round and around, regularly past the Pakistan team, like a predator and his prey.

Another record-breaking day for England on the cards, then?

We shall see. Given how flat the pitch has looked throughout this match, it really would not be a shock if they did surpass that 710-7.

We've seen Joe Root going through a gentle warm up. He is moving slightly better than he was last evening after a night's rest but having been on the field for all but eight balls of this Test, it's understandable he might not be moving 100% freely.

Still, England need him and Harry Brook to bat on for a while today if they are to get a substantial first-innings lead over Pakistan and try to force a win.

The difficult thing for Pakistan is they only picked one frontline spinner. You look to him to control the scoring rate and he never allowed the screws to tighten. Without him today it puts Pakistan in a really tricky position.

I would be surprised if they don't beat their post-war high-score of 710-7.
