All about Steve: Joe Root's insatiable appetite for runs is like me at an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet.

Matt Wass: In years to come England cricket fans will look at this last 10-12 years and realise how lucky they were to witness three of our all-time greats playing in the same team for over TEN years. #broad #anderson #root

Joe Root gets a handshake from Ben Stokes and a pat on the back from Jimmy Anderson on his way off.

We all knew he was good when he made that 73 on debut as a 21-year-old against India 12 years ago.

Now he is, statistically at least, England's greatest.

It's been very much England's session. It's been a remarkable achievement for Joe Root. But there's still a job to do in the afternoon. England are still needing a significant amount of runs to avoid the follow-on against Pakistan.

Joe Root seems too nice a person for something like this. But breaking the record for most test runs by an England batsman on your brother's wedding day, could be seen as the ultimate game of sibling one-up-man-ship! (Maybe that's just my family!)

If ever there was a befitting way of Joe Root breaking Sir Alastair Cook’s record then we’ve just seen it. A trademark Root on drive - what a player and a joy to watch!

Joe Root seems so focussed on wrestling England back into this game. He has other things in his mind - saving his team in this Test match.

Watch: TMS react as Root breaks England test record

Joe Root has become the highest-scoring Englishman in Test match history. And he's done so indemonstrably. There's no raising of the bat, no kissing of the badge and no jumping up and down!

And what a way to do it. A perfect on-drive.

Joe Root doesn't even look bothered. He just gives a wave to the dressing room.

The greatest to ever do it for England? The stats say so.

Joe Root is a great player. There's no area of his game that you look at and you say, I'm not sure. No stage today have I felt that he might get out.
