I've been holding off mentioning this because we all know what happens when I do but we should probably keep our eye on another record here.

England's fastest Test century was hit by Gilbert Jessop in 76 balls back in 1902. Ben Duckett is 70 from 58.

Ben Duckett is having more supplies brought to him. With a thumb like that, you need tape in there to hold it in all in place. It looks like he is having it replaced quickly and strapped back. It's been a fantastic knock from him so far.

That's big for a Wednesday morning...

It's still Smith > Root > Kohli > Williamson at Test level for me but I am sure many of you will disagree.

jambarrell: At what point do we start to say Root is THE finest of his generation bar none? He's pulling far away from Kohli and Smith now on every measure. The only one left is Smith's average but that gap is closing and if Smith continues to open it could be done next winter.

Right now it doesn't seem a matter of if Joe Root breaks Alastair Cook's record today but whether he does so before lunch.

Three more takes him within seven while Ben Duckett thrashes two more fours - one off the middle and one fortuitously off the edge over slip - to overtake his team-mate's score.

Ben Duckett is having a little break to take some medication. You can see he is holding his hand as if to say it's sore.

Prime Joe Root. The dab into the covers for ones and twos. Ticking the scoreboard over and keeping things going.

And having survived, Ben Duckett cuts hard to the boundary off Aamer Jamal. After doing so he takes off his helmet to reveal a sweat-soaked barnet as Wonderwall rings around Multan.

It's an odd review because there wasn't a great reaction from those behind. It felt like there was a noise on the way through.

Definitely no edge there. Duckett has missed it by a good couple of inches.

Pakistan lose a review, leaving them with two remaining.

But has Ben Duckett nicked this?

    Pakistan don't look particularly confident.

That is the eighth time Ben Duckett has reached his half-century at a rate equal to or better than run-a-ball in Tests. He goes past Ian Botham and Jonny Bairstow who have both done it seven times for England. The top spot for England is held by Joe Root who has done it on nine occasions, Duckett is now number two on this unique list.

There was a time when fifties at better than a run per ball were rare from England. Ben Duckett makes them look routine.

This half-century comes up in 45 deliveries.

The ball is certainly still swinging just the tiniest bit for Aamer Jamal although it's not travelling at the same speed as when Naseem Shah bowls.

I wondered if there's a correlation between pace and the bouffant which Naseem sports so well.

It's free entry in Multan today and it's certainly made a difference to the crowd. In the stand away to my left, which has been empty for two days, there are some excited schoolchildren making plenty of noise. The Andy Zaltzman banner remains in the stand high above the dressing rooms opposite. With the second Test also at this ground, it could see another seven days of cricket.

Zak Crawley is doing fine. Could he still improve? Yes. Should he be dropped? No. Let's move on.

Joe Root adds three more to keep the strike.

Talk of dropping him is ridiculous, but Crawley (and Duckett) do need to work on their conversion when they're batting so well. There's no guarantee the new batsman will find it as easy once a wicket falls.

    Dom

There was a time early in Graham Thorpe’s career when he received very similar criticism to Zak Crawley - not converting 50s. On the whole and with hindsight? I'll take that.

Runs may be flowing but Naseem Shah is in the middle of a decent spell.

Joe Root signalled with his glove a few overs ago that the ball was reverse swinging a little and this one might have moved the tiniest bit to beat the edge too.
