Joe Root jumps up suffering with a bit of cramp after missing with an attempted sweep off Abrar Ahmed.

Pakistan wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan shows little sympathy, throwing the ball at the stumps as Root was hopping about. To no avail.

We'll have a delay as a drink and a couple of tablets are brought out for the England talisman - and, in fact, the umpires have decided now is as good a time as any to take drinks.

Normal service is resumed for Harry Brook as he stretches to reach a full, wide ball from Shaheen Afridi and slap it through the covers.

    Four more.

After playing out five dot balls, Harry Brook is in danger of his strike-rate dropping below 100.

But he pushes a single the last ball of the Abrar Ahmed over to keep himself going at a run-a-ball.

Captains are desperate to shut off boundaries against England but in doing that it leaves vast gaps to be able to rotate the strike.

People have got frustrated in the past at England's inability to accept that and not hit fours but they have found the right balance today.

Of Joe Root's many remarkable achievements, I think giving anyone from England a positive memory of that Ashes tour might be his most impressive!

Anyway, in Multan, Pakistan have gone back to Shaheen Afridi.

Harry Brook whips him through the leg side for three before Root nails a pull shot to end the over, but it's straight to the square leg fielder.

Bravo, Joe! I remember watching Root during the 2013/14 Ashes series. In the face of Johnson's retributive hostility he just smiled at him, which really impressed me. His humility and humour makes his dedication, skill and achievements that much more admirable to me.

Freebie from Abrar Ahmed as he drifts one down leg, allowing Harry Brook to sweep hard behind square for his fourth boundary already.

By comparison, Joe Root - who has batted superbly - has hit just six all innings.

That was an imperious shot from Brook. His head was tucked down absolutely staring at the ball.

Absolutely, Ben. Plus, if your star batter has to have one weakness, that's the one you'd pick.

Oooff, that is beautiful. Overpitched ever so slightly and Harry Brook drives sumptuously through the covers for four.

It looks like he's in the mood.

It’s actually nice of Root to humanise himself by being the worst player in world cricket at telling his partner whether to review an lbw.

Aamer Jamal gets the ball to reverse but it only helps the ball swing right onto the middle of Harry Brook's bat.

Whipped through mid-wicket for four. Lovely shot.

An over bookended by singles but Abrar Ahmed looks to have found a bit of rhythm after a tricky start.

Pakistan will be glad to see that because you sense, if they are to apply some pressure on such a flat surface, this is their moment.

Harry Brook, who enjoyed a pretty spectacular tour of Pakistan on his last visit, is the new batter.

He's off the mark straightaway, clipping through mid-wicket for two before effortlessly guiding the ball down to deep third for four.

Good start for him but a successful over from Aamer Jamal and Pakistan.

Ben Duckett has been slightly allergic to England centuries. It'd probably in the back of his mind, although he constantly says he is not going to change the way he plays. But it will be definitely something he'd be thinking about as he struggles to get over that line.

Three reds, the ball would have thudded into the top of leg stump and Ben Duckett has to go.

The left-hander was caught on the crease as Aamer Jamal just got the ball to angle in at him from round the wicket.

It hit the thigh pad but it was the back leg and Duckett is not a tall man. Big wicket for Pakistan to break a 136-run stand.

Pakistan think they've got the breakthrough as Aamer Jamal hits Ben Duckett on the back leg.

Quick review from the England left-hander, though.

It's not a stretch to say that was the best over from Abrar Ahmed so far.

One record at a time, Simon. We've likely got a bit of a wait before Joe Root catches up to that mighty trio.

Good over from Abrar Ahmed. Not exactly troubling Root but getting about as close to it as we've seen for quite some time.
