    Surrey 27-0 - target 221

Rory Burns takes a step down the pitch to Jack Leach and drives, but can't pierce the infield.

A fourth maiden for the England left-armer. Surrey tick off another six balls.

Craig Overton does a Stuart Broad and changes the bails around in a superstitious attempt to bring a wicket.

It brings an appeal from the third ball of Archie Vaughan's latest over as he wraps the pads of Dom Sibley.

Nothing from umpire David Millns. Too high?

  2. Postpublished at 13:39 British Summer Time 12 September

    Gloucs 117-3 - target 234

    Gloucestershire are halfway there.

Miles Hammond tries to drive Toby Roland-Jones through cover but doesn't clear the inner field.

Roland-Jones adjusts his line and Hammond defends down the ground.

Another maiden over from the Middlesex captain.

Unfortunately, dark clouds are gathering overhead...

  3. 'Increasingly likely' Hampshire will have to bat againpublished at 13:39 British Summer Time 12 September

    Kent 207 & 165-5 v Hampshire 403

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

Hampshire need to get rid of one of these pretty quick or else it is pretty certain they'll bat again.

It is looking increasingly likely that they will be batting for a little while, even if they get these last five wickets.

  4. Postpublished at 13:35 British Summer Time 12 September

    Gloucs 117-3 - target 234

Miles Hammond drops the hands down and sways away from a Tom Helm bouncer, then taps the third ball to deep backward point for one.

    James Bracey defends.

  5. 'Pressure does funny things'published at 13:33 British Summer Time 12 September

    Surrey 26-0 - target 221

    Dan Whiting
    BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

So much of cricket is played in the head.

Pressure does funny things to sides.

  6. Postpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 12 September

    Gloucs 116-3 - target 234

    A single for Bracey.

Another let off for Gloucestershire as Miles Hammond plays close to the ball from Tom Helm outside off and survives.

James Bracey defends Toby Roland-Jones down the ground.

An LBW shout is turned down. Looks a bit leg side and high.

The last ball is clipped sweetly through wide mid on for four.

    Great shot.

That's the 50 partnership for the fourth wicket in 89 balls.

Dom Sibley continues to give Jack Leach full respect, with impeccable defence to all five balls.

Then a switch flicks and the Surrey opener decides to be expansive. Instead he gets a thick outside edge and takes two.

  8. Postpublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 12 September

    Surrey 21-0 - target 221

Rory Burns plays the first shot in anger after lunch, cutting away Archie Vaughan for a single.

Dom Sibley follows suit. Two from the over. Surrey need exactly 200 more.

Somerset legend Marcus Trescothick has taken a break from England white-ball coaching duties and is watching on.

How he'd love to be in the thick of the battle I'm sure.

  9. Postpublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 12 September

    Kent 207 & 149-5 v Hampshire 403

This is really hard-graft batting for Jack Leaning and Harry Finch.

Two former Test bowlers in Kyle Abbott and Mo Abbas are bowling incessantly straight, with Ben Brown up to the stumps.

The ball still has a little bit of nip still in it as well.

    Kent still 45 in arrears.

    Essex celebrateImage source, Rex Features

An excellent win for Essex, negated by the unnecessarily harsh points deduction earlier. Where are the considerations of supporters in this process? This is a decision that punishes us too as we see our side slip down the table. Is this really the most appropriate sanction for an error that truly didn't impact the game at Trent Bridge?

    Stephen B, via WhatsApp

Re the Essex points deduction, how can a major bat manufacturer not have a standard legal size bat? Or do professional cricketers have all bats custom made? If so, surely the width should be non negotiable...

  11. dropped catch

Bracey dropped on 30published at 13:26 British Summer Time 12 September

    Gloucs 111-3 - target 234

Tom Helm is also round the wicket.

Close! James Bracey drives a full ball outside off and the ball bounces out of Sam Robson's fingertips!

High chance. Very tough indeed. But it was a chance.

    Two runs taken.

  12. Postpublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 12 September

    Surrey 19-0 - target 221

We've lost 10 further minutes to rain and three more overs - 60 remain.

Archie Vaughan lets out a big shout for a catch in the slips off Dom Sibley, but nothing doing. It looked to be pad and no bat.

A single opens the afternoon account.

Jack Leach continues at the Marcus Trescothick End.

Dom Sibley looks to leans forward to smother the spin and does just that. Maiden.

  13. Postpublished at 13:23 British Summer Time 12 September

    Gloucs 109-3 - target 234

Now then. Josh de Caires is out of the attack after just one over since lunch.

Toby Roland-Jones is back on. There will be some concerns about the Middlesex over rate but for now the hosts have to go all out for the win.

The Middlesex captain bowls round the wicket and Miles Hammond drives straight without getting the ball away.

    Maiden over.

  14. Postpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 12 September

That last shot takes James Bracey to 1,000 runs for the Championship season.

  15. Postpublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 12 September

    Gloucs 109-3 - target 234

We have a slip, cover and short extra cover in for Josh de Caires.

Miles Hammond gets one driving on the front foot through the off side.

James Bracey tries to cut one that's too close for the shot and survives an appeal for caught behind.

Tom Helm will bowl from the Pavilion End and starts with a loose ball, short and wide tapped away by Hammond for an easy single.

A short fourth ball is pulled away for two to deep square.

The last ball is driven just past gully for four.

A bit of a loose shot but still very welcome runs for Gloucestershire even so.

  16. Play back under way at Tauntonpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 12 September

    Surrey 18-0 - target 221

Archie Vaughan bowlingImage source, Rex Features

Rory Burns and Dom Sibley walk out to the crease for the 11th and penultimate session of a super top-of-the-table clash.

Archie Vaughan to bowl the first over of the afternoon.

Surrey need a further 203 runs to win off 63 overs, while Somerset need all 10 wickets to clinch victory.

The Londoners nurse a 24-point lead over Somerset so a draw would be no bad thing for them. All results are still possible.

If Somerset were to win, they would close within eight points of the leaders.

But a Surrey win would take them 40 points clear of Somerset, and Hampshire would go second if they beat Kent, but with a yawning 35-point chasm to top spot.

Just seven balls bowled at Worcester, six runs scored - and it's all change again.

    Players off, covers on.

And this time it looks like someone's turned on the taps.

    Suddenly, it's hosing it down!!!

    This could be terminal!

  18. Delay at Tauntonpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 12 September

    Surrey 18-0 - target 221

A slight delay to the restart at Taunton after another rain shower.

The covers are being taken off and a rope has been trawled around the outfield to remove unwanted moisture.

The sun's out and we should have play in no time.

  19. Back underway at Worcesterpublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 12 September

    Worcestershire 307, Warwickshire 128 & 250-3

The lunchtime rain threat has been averted - and we are back underway at Worcester with a glorious Hamza Shaikh cover drive.

But the clouds overhead do still look fairly menacing . . .
