There's a lot of New Zealand players out there with towels. They will need to keep that ball as dry as possible.

  2. Eng 14-0published at 1.1 overs

Maia Bouchier isn't taking any time to get going.

She wallops an overly full opening ball from Hannah Rowe over mid-wicket for a one-bounce four.

  3. Eng 8-0published at 1 over

Bouchier takes a single to long-on, bringing Danni Wyatt on strike for the final ball of the over.

    Wyatt fends it off.

That is such a pick up. That is six on any ground off any bowler.

    Eng 7-0published at 0.4 overs

    Cracking shot!

Kerr's short ball heads down the leg side again and Bouchier times her shot beautifully to lift the ball over backward square for six!

  6. Eng 1-0published at 0.1 overs

Kerr's opening delivery drifts down the leg side for a wide, before Bouchier hacks the first legitimate ball square - no run.

People who've stuck with this live through the delay may recall that at 18:39 I was crowing that for once it was raining on the south coast and dry in Salford.

Well, now it's dry at Hove and tipping it down at MediaCity.

    Life has restored balance.

  10. 'A shorter game should bring the sides closer together'published at 20:19 British Summer Time 9 July 2024

England captain Heather Knight: "We'll have to assess as we go. The ball should get a little bit wet so hopefully that will suit us. In a shorter game you have to stay composed and you've got a little bit more time than you think, you don't have to go from ball one.

"I'm really impressed with how we're playing. The challenge is to do it again. We've been really ruthless and smart so far. We want to keep pushing forward as individuals and as a side. We're not resting on our laurels. A shorter game should bring the sides closer together.

"Lauren Bell comes in for Linsey Smith and Dani Gibson for Freya Kemp."

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine: "Going to bowl first. With overhead conditions and the pitch has been under cover so we will have first crack at it.

"It is such a different game being a shortened one so can't really compare to first game. We showed signs of being positive with the bat, we have all the more reason to so here being a shortened game."

  12. New Zealand win the toss and bowlpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 9 July 2024

Sophie Devine has won the toss and for the second time in this series has decided that her side are going to have a bowl.

    Right. Hold on.

I won't stand for this slander. The first set of sweets were left by a departing team. The second set will only be taken when the tennis desk leave.

I'm essentially just clearing up - I don't even really want to eat them. But I'm all about sustainability, you see, and sometimes that involves eating your body weight in gelatinous treats.

Mr Peter, there is an old joke: I suffered from kleptomania so I took something for it. Stealing sweets from colleagues, tut tut.

How will two further hours of rain and a shortened match affect the respective line-ups?

England played four spinners in the first T20, will they repeat that today?

Well, you say that Caz, but we have sudden exciting news!

The umpires have taken another look and we're getting a game - nine overs a side, toss at 20:15, start at 20:30 BST.

I'd say jump in the car, but I don't think you'd make it. Maybe a high-speed hovercraft along the coast?

Looks like our decision to stay in Portsmouth rather than drive along the coast was a good one. Can't match Alex but did drive from Pompey to Leicester last year to see a rain affected game between England and Sri Lanka. And the least said about England v Pakistan in Taunton this year the better!

Further update whilst sitting in a pub in Hove, around the corner from the ground. Fries were solid, ice cream sundae even better and £3.30 pints. Oh, and it's still raining.

I'd steel her for disappointment, Peter.

But then she must learn that life is full of it. For instance, the bag of sweets I nabbed from the football news desk will soon be empty.

However, we must search for scraps of hope amid the gloom.

A case in point - the tennis desk will be leaving soon, and I shall swoop upon their remaining confectionary like a mighty vulture.
