  1. Chester-le-Street cheated by the weatherpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 29 April

    Durham 358, Essex 314-3

Durham have now lost five full days of play this season because of the weather.

The groundsman says he can't remember a spring as wet as this one. I wonder where it stands in terms of records?

I would be surprised if Durham have lost five days at home in April before.

The abandonment of the Hampshire game in the first week of the season was actually the first time an entire game had been lost here in April.

Previous abandonments were in July and August.

What a difference a day makes at Grace Road.

The gateman, perhaps overcome by the prospect of play, said he’d heard there had been a double declaration overnight and that Northants had set the Foxes 338 to win.

It felt unkind to disillusion him, but now we’re back to eight points for the draw, the likelihood of either team being inclined to ‘set up’ a game is surely minimal, at this stage of the season anyway.

Assuming Leicestershire bat reasonably well and avoid the follow on (ie score at least 304), Northants look set to take 16 points, Leicestershire 13 or 14, returns that would keep both counties close to the top of Division Two.

Now if it were still just five points for a draw...

  3. Today's Weatherpublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 29 April

The BBC Weather Forecast says "Breezy with rain and showers for most today. Sunnier and mild to the south-east."

Don't like the sound of the "rain and showers" bit - but it also suggests an improved temperature range of between nine and 13 degrees centigrade. So that is at least an upgrade on the first three days.

  5. Good Morning and Welcomepublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 29 April

Good morning - and welcome back for day four of week four of this season's County Championship cricket coverage.

Three games lost a whole day's play yesterday - and they may struggle to reach a positive conclusion today. But there are a lot of questions to be answered in the other four.

Can dual back-to-back county champions Surrey finish off hapless Hampshire at the Oval? The visitors weil resume five wickets down, still trailing by 92 runs.

Can Worcestershire - cricket's ultinate yo-yo side - force a first victory since coming back up at Kidderminster against the top flight's longest survivors Somerset?

At Edgbaston, can Notts really take 15 wickets in a day to beat draw specialists Warwickshire?

And have Middlesex - and their two centurions - maybe levered themselves into a winning position against Gloucestershire at Nevil Road?
