No further drama. India pick up two singles as Linsey Smith races through her opening over.

Dropped catch - Rawal on 2published at 1.1 overs

Oh, it feels harsh but that's a drop from Charlie Dean!

Pratika Rawal miscues Linsey Smith's opening delivery and Charlie Dean, diving full stretch in the off-side, gets two hands to it but can't hold on.

  3. Ind 4-0published at 1 over

    Target 289

Pratika Rawal defends three deliveries before getting India off the mark with a single.

Smriti Mandhana, by contrast, starts her innings in heart-in-mouth fashion, nearly dragging onto her stumps. She survives and collects two.

A wide and a dot to finish the opening over.

They're going to have bowl well to defend it.

England have got to stick to their plans. It's hard to play when the stumps are in play.

Keep it simple and England should get over the line - but India have some dangerous players.

The players are back out in Indore, with India chasing 289.

Remember, victory for England would see them book their place in the semi-finals alongside Australia and South Africa.

Pratika Rawal and Smriti Mandhana are in the middle for India. Lauren Bell will open the bowling for England.

England probably should have done better with top 4 scores of 22, 56, 109 & 38, but double the 30-over score of 137 and they've done ok. 289 should take some getting, so we could be in for another classic at this World Cup!

Jones played decently finally but the brutal fact is, England are essentially a two woman batting side. Take Knight and NSB out of the equation and they are absolutely nowhere.

  9. How stat?!published at 14:16 BST

Heather Knight has starred again today, but England's batters at positions five-seven have struggled in this tournament.

    • Sophia Dunkley - averaging 11, high score 18
    • Emma Lamb - 7.25, high score 13
    • Alice Capsey - 9.50, high score 20

The definition of madness is repeating the same error over and over. Edwards' continual mantra of selecting the rabbits in headlights (Dunkley, Lamb and Capsey) when Wyatt-Hodge is sitting on the bench is frankly ridiculous. If Lewis was doing this or even McCullum there would be pelters.

    James, Essex

Another set of abject failures from Dunkley, Lamb and Capsey averaging less than 10 between them. How must DWH feel watching that. Surely time to give her a chance now. She has long been one of the countries leading run-scorers...

However, Knight's exit in the 45th over triggered a flurry of wickets.

England slipped from 249-3 to 257-6 in a little over two overs and lost a further two wickets as they finished on 288-8.

Deepti Sharma was the pick of India's bowlers, taking 4-51.

England won the toss and enjoyed a positive start with the bat.

They made it through the powerplay without losing a wicket for the first time since their tournament opener before Deepti Sharma struck twice to send Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones on their way.

While Beaumont's 22 (43) was scratchy, Jones looked in good touch as she made 56 (68) - her highest score of the tournament.

Heather Knight of EnglandImage source, Getty Images

England batter Heather Knight on her century: "I am really pleased to contribute. I have been fairly quiet the last few games but it was nice to play on that wicket. We are just above par but we will have to bowl well."

On her innings: "I took time to get in. It was tacky at first but I put my foot down. Nat [Sciver-Brunt] and I got things moving and my sweeps seemed effective today.

"It is a super fast outfield here so it can be easy to score quickly. If the seamers play well and keep their lines, that will be important.

"We need to take early breakthroughs and they will probably get a partnership that we will try to break."

Right then, is that total enough for England to secure the win and qualify for the semi-finals?

That is a very, very good score for England. It isn't going to be easy for England to defend if they get after a couple of bowlers, but they'll be pretty happy with that.

  18. Eng 288-8published at 50 overs

Linsey Smith arrives for the conclusion of the innings.

She sneaks an extra run off a wide to bring Charlie Dean back on strike, and the all-rounder rewards the smart running with a four through long-on off a full toss.

Dean strikes into the leg side off the final ball of the innings, and the England batters run two.

A pretty handy total for Nat Sciver-Brunt's charges, although perhaps not quite not what they might have hoped for five overs ago.

    Lazy from Sophie Ecclestone.

You have to be diving in that situation. You have to look as if you want to be out there batting.

Ecclestone run out (Mandhana) 3 (Eng 280-4)

England try to run another run... can't get there.

Shree Charani bowls the final over, and England take three singles from her first three balls.

Charlie Dean reverse sweeps the next ball and calls Sophie Ecclestone through for a risky run, but the spinner is beaten by the throw having not attempted a dive.
