We'll start to see how quickly the ball will lose it's hardness.

  2. Eng 72-3published at 30 overs

Darcie Brown is attacking the crease with real purpose. She starts with four dot balls to Nat Sciver-Brunt before England's number four flicks one off her legs for a single.

England's batters quietly going about their business, picking off the bad ball.

England have to keep rotating the strike, they have to keep sharing the workload.

Australia would love to get another three wickets in this session.

  4. Eng 71-3published at 29 overs

The MCG's capacity is 100,024 and a crowd of 20,000 is expected today. A bigger crowd is expected at the weekend.

Sophia Dunkley frees up her arms against Alana King and drills a full delivery straight down the ground for four. Nice.

What's the crowd like at the MCG? Anything under 40,000 looks empty.

  6. ouch!

    Aus 67-3published at 28 overs

Darcie Brown digs it in back of a length to Sophia Dunkley, who turns her head away and plays with soft hands. The England batter was expecting a bit more bounce off the pitch.

A couple of balls later and Brown gets a nasty bouncer to climb into Dunkley, who wears one on her bicep as she attempts to take evasive action.

    Australia turning up the heat.

England have a lot to play for. But are they going to be brave and take the game on? Or are they going to occupy the crease?

    That's the spirit, Roberto...

Thanks, Sam. What kind of position will England be in when the lights start to come on, I wonder.

Right, Alana King has the ball in hand. Nat Sciver-Brunt has just remarked her guard.

Right then, the players are heading out for the start of the next session.

England have a lot of work to do to post a decent first-innings total. To see whether they can manage that, or whether it'll be Australia pushing home their advantage, I'll hand you over to Timothy Abraham.

Not for the first time, England are in dire need of a big knock from Nat Sciver-Brunt.

One of the ways Australia are ahead of the rest of the world is their ruthlessness.

They won't let up. They want 16-0.

Darcie Brown then trapped Tammy Beaumont lbw for eight before Kim Garth returned to break the key partnership between Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt.

It was the England skipper dismissed lbw for 25 to leave the tourists 47-3.

If we carry on playing like this then we'll be all out 110-130. We might as well try and smack it to all parts and see if we can up to around 200, annoy them and then pray for some form from the bowlers.

  19. Tea - Eng 64-3published at 26 overs

Probing over from Ash Gardner but Sophia Dunkley survives and that's it for the session.

Tea on day one and, as has been the case throughout this series, Australia are on top.

  20. Eng 64-3published at 25.1 overs

Last over of the session and we are going to see some spin. Ash Gardner is on to bowl her first over of the match.

Sophia Dunkley goes back to defend her first ball. Five more until lunch/ tea/ whatever we're calling this first interval in a day-night Test these days.
