Summary

  1. Postpublished at 08:47 Greenwich Mean Time

A change for England. Mark Wood is replaced by Gus Atkinson.

  2. Ind 43-1published at 9 overs

Shubman Gill seems intent on using his feet on this pitch - the pace is fairly docile.

In an attempt to surprise him and perhaps keep him in his crease Saqib Mahmood goes short but Gill just clobbers him to back down the ground for four.

This is the 37th time Mark Wood has opened the bowling in ODIs, but it's the first instance since March 2021 - after almost four years.

In recent times, Wood has struggled in the middle overs - averaging 109 in overs 11-40 in ODIs since the start of 2022. He's taken only three wickets in 56 overs in the middle phase of the game in the timeline.

England's think tank are maybe looking at tinkering his role in the set-up. He's done well so far with 1-14 in his four overs in this opening new-ball spell.

  4. Ind 39-1published at 8 overs

    A maiden from Mark Wood.

Virat Kohli had a short spell of treatment on an elbow injury in that over. He's fine to continue though.

This isn't the only match going on today, with a number of teams warming up for the Champions Trophy.

Off the back of their Test series, Sri Lanka are hosting Australia in Colombo - and it's been another bad day for the hosts, as they were bowled out for 214 with four overs to spare.

Captain Charith Asalanka made over half their runs, striking 127 before he was the penultimate wicket to fall, caught by Jake Fraser McGurk off the bowling of Sean Abbott.

No other Sri Lanka batter made more than 30, while Abbott was the pick of the Australian bowlers, making 3-61 as his side secured a target of 215.

  6. Ind 39-1published at 7 overs

    How has that not hit!?!

Saqib Mahmood and Virat Kohli are in a right battle here.

After those consecutive boundaries Mahmood fights back. A beautiful delivery beats Kohli on the inside edge and is just inches away from crashing into off stump.

  7. Not outpublished at 6.3 overs

    Ind 38-1

Kohli is home. Panic over for the Ahmedabad crowd.

Kohli responds with back-to-back fours. The first through mid-wicket, before a gorgeous cover drive.

  8. Umpire reviewpublished at 6.1 overs

    Ind 30-1

Has Virat Kohli been run out? He is sent back by Shubman Gill and Phil Salt is able to gather Mark Wood's throw and bring down the striker's end stumps.

  9. Ind 30-1published at 6 overs

Oh, that's a lovely ball. Perfect seam position again from Mark Wood as he gets the ball to jag past the edge of a prodding Virat Kohli.

Wood squares Shubman Gill up to end the over but the ball runs away for four through the cordon.

Re - Steve @8.17am Rather than England worrying about who bats at 7/8/9, just have the top order not scoop balls to fielders as consistently as they are doing, attacking shots don't have to be in the air to point or deep square leg.

  11. Ind 23-1published at 5 overs

Shubman Gill is on the charge. The India opener comes down the track and drives back past Saqib Mahmood in superb style.

It's a bit feast or famine at the moment for India.

England in recent times have been effective picking up early wickets while bowling first. In ODIs after the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, England have taken at least a wicket in the first 10 overs in each of their five games.

In the timeline in overs 1-10, they've taken nine wickets in five innings bowling first at an exceptional average of 22.0, conceding only at 4.55 runs per overs.

In contrast, while defending they've taken eight wickets in nine innings at a higher average of 78.3, conceding at 6.95 runs per over.

This pitch looks pretty true. That's based on the fact that Virat Kohli is able to pick up his first boundary with a sumptuous drive to the cover ropes.

Adil Rashid & Mark Wood should both bat ahead of Gus Atkinson in this format. Atkinson uses up too many deliveries & seems to not know either how to score or how to rotate the strike to a more confident batter.

Lovely shot. Just a gentle push from Shubman Gill and he picks up the first boundary off the bat.

For India, it's a case of going out and trying different elements. For England, it's the opposite. They'll want to get at least one win for their confidence.

Virat Kohli is off the mark. It's a trademark drop and run into the covers. The crowd are obviously buzzing for his arrival at the crease.

Shubman Gill is also up and running with a nice little guide to deep third.

  18. Ind 6-1published at 1.2 overs

Virat Kohli is the new batter and he gets an absolute beauty first up.

There's more movement for Mark Wood as he gets one to leave Kohli.

    Mark Wood strikes first ball!

What a lovely England from the England quick. He finds a little bit of movement away from Rohit Sharma and the India skipper can only edge through to a diving Phil Salt.

A century in the last game, but Rohit is back among the low-scorers.

  20. Ind 6-0published at 1 over

A more controlled end to the over from Saqib Mahmood. There's a tight leave from Shubman Gill, but it is good judgement.

Mahmood hit a nice length in that over.
