I like the fact Shoaib Bashir is going to have a spell before lunch. Some balls turning sharply gives a bowler confidence.

  2. SL 66-4published at 21 overs

An early look at Shoaib Bashir's spin, with 20 minutes or so to go until lunch.

The over is safely negotiated, but one does keep very low and Chandimal has to jam his bat down on it at the last second.

That'll send shivers through the dressing rooms.

  3. SL 64-4published at 20 overs

    Yep, and this is why.

Spare a thought for Kusal Mendis' thumb.

Everybody just sits that little bit further forward when Mark Wood is bowling.

Matthew Potts has been the least effective of England's bowlers this morning, conceding 33 from five overs.

But he's bowling at the other end to Mark Wood, so perhaps Sri Lanka are a little more confident of scoring against him and simply looking to survive the rest.

Just over half an hour to go until lunch.

It's the way to play Mark Wood. There's acreage of the off side, all you need to do is get your bat on it.

  7. SL 55-4published at 18 overs

If you've got the pace, you might as well try and use it to your advantage. Dhananjaya de Silva dabs Mark Wood down to deep third for four more.

This, by the way, was Wood's first ball. Ever faced a "loosener" at 95mph?

    Nah, you're all right.

  8. SL 48-4published at 17 overs

Wide, and hammered for four by Dinesh Chandimal.

He knows he's not going to get much of that from Mark Wood at the other end, so he cashes in against Matthew Potts at 82mph.

I go back to when I played. It was drilled into you how tough Test cricket was, the mental drain of playing Test cricket. But this group with Ben and Baz have taken all that away.

  10. SL 41-4published at 16 overs

He is just box office, isn't he?

After the shine wore off the new ball and the clouds dispersed, it went a bit flat and scoring looked much easier, particularly for Kusal Mendis.

    Enter Mark Wood.

Not only did it bounce sharply, it nipped back in sharply. That came out of nowhere, it's a brutal delivery.

Mark Wood's started well at Old Trafford - it's just pace, sheer pace. He gets a little bit extra out of any surface.

Kusal's looking at fingers, thinking 'Oh wow, where did that come from?'

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 15.1 overs

    Mendis c Brook b Wood 24 (SL 40-4)

My word, how do you play that?

Unplayable from Mark Wood. It's 93mph and rears up at him from back of a length. There have ben some soft dismissals this morning but that isn't one of them, Kusal Mendis isn't to blame here.

He's whacked on the thumb and it flies through to Harry Brook at slip. I think he might be going for a scan after that.

  14. SL 40-3published at 15 overs

A run out is the last thing Sri Lanka need here, and they're spared by Mark Wood slipping as he goes to pick up the ball.

    That would've been chaos.

  15. Postpublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 21 August

Kusal Mendis has looked rather composed so far, considering he came in during a period of Sri Lanka losing three wickets without scoring a run.

  16. SL 39-3published at 14 overs

Yep, Dinesh Chandimal does just that.

He dabs into the covers and absolutely legs it down the other end. Kusal Mendis wasn't quite so keen to get down there, and I can't blame him one bit.

The best shot to play to a bowler going at 90-95mph is to just get on your toes and get down the other end. Then say to your partner, 'Yeah, he's bowling pretty quick.'

  18. SL 37-3published at 13.1 overs

    Welcome back, Mark Wood!

The crowd comes to life as his first ball is 95mph and Dinesh Chandimal sways out of the way but still ends up on the floor.

    Strap yourselves in.

Right now, Chandimal and Kusal Mendis are playing in their usual way. Let this partnership build and build, set short targets - get to lunch.

Kusal played that really skilfully, best shot we've seen today I think.
