Summary

  • England bowl out Sri Lanka for 236 - day one report

  • Sri Lanka captain De Silva hits fluent 74 & debutant Rathnayake 72

  • Tourists show fight having slipped to 113-7

  • Woakes and Bashir take three wickets each

  • First of three Tests

  1. SL 37-3published at 13 overs

More positive signs from Kusal Mendis.

He's played the ball late, and guides Potts for four more to deep third. That forces Potts to go fuller, so Mendis gratefully drives him through the covers for the second boundary of the over.

And of course, because the ball isn't swinging any more and Sri Lanka are actually managing to hit it, England ask the umpires to have a look. It'll come as a shock to absolutely nobody that the ball is fine.

I think this will be a good surface. We haven't seen anything alarming just yet and it's always got a little bit of pace.

Atkinson loses his line a little bit for the first time with that boundary.

  4. SL 29-3published at 12 overs

A flurry of runs all of a sudden, as Atkinson strays onto Chandimal's pads and he clips nicely down to fine leg for another boundary.

The cloud cover has eased and the ball isn't swinging as much now. Sri Lanka's openers and Angelo Mathews must be kicking themselves.

Some news from England, who have released Jordan Cox and Olly Stone to play in the next round of County Championship Division One matches starting tomorrow. Cox will play for Essex in their match against Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl and Stone will travel to the Riverside for Nottinghamshire's visit to Durham.

Some of these England bowlers like Woakes and Wood have played no competitive cricket since their last Test match. Potts has been playing for the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.

  7. SL 25-3published at 11 overs

Matthew Potts replaces Chris Woakes, and he concedes England's first boundaries of the morning with a controlled edge down to third man by Kusal Mendis, followed by a more aggressive swipe to the same part of the ground.

For a bit of context regarding how difficult Sri Lanka's task is during this tour, they haven't played a Test in England for eight years. This is also their first three-match series since 2018, and only four of their XI have played a Test in this country previously.

And in conditions so different to theirs at home, they've only had one warm-up game.

Atkinson seems to bowl a good line and good pace with a bit either way. His control is good and he's been at the batsmen all the time.

  9. SL 14-3published at 10 overs

    The pressure builds.

Kusal Mendis times one nicely off the back foot, looks set for a boundary or at least a couple, but Ollie Pope leaps to his right at gully and prevents any run at all.

    Sri Lanka are going nowhere.

Here's Chris Woakes casually starting the morning with a double-wicket maiden.

There's quite a brisk breeze at the moment and gusts of up to 40mph are expected today. This may be helping the bowlers.

  12. SL 14-3published at 9 overs

A couple of lovely drives in the over from Kusal Mendis, the first finding the fielder but the second flying nicely past mid-off for three.

Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal have got to keep looking to be positive, in the face of England's excellent start.

Daniel Eckersley: So, Sri Lanka, would you like to bat or bowl on day 1? Sri Lanka: Yes.

  14. SL 8-3published at 8 overs

Sri Lanka's task isn't going to get any easier. They are struggling to find a balance between attack and defence, and while they can't afford to lose any more wickets here, they also won't get anywhere by just going into their shells.

Ollie Pope brings in a fourth slip, and Kusal Mendis riskily drives through the covers for a couple.

  15. How's stat?!published at 11:37 British Summer Time 21 August

Sorry Sri Lanka fans, but we had to check for Sri Lanka's lowest ever total in a Test - it's the 71 they were skittled out for against Pakistan in Kandy in 1994. Against England, it's 81 in Colombo in 2001 - a match in which Graham Thorpe scored a century and was man of the match.

  16. Postpublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 21 August

Gus Atkinson started this mini-collapse with a well-executed short ball.

Sri Lanka began with discipline, but struggled to score freely, which may have led to some frustration eventually.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 7 overs

    Mathews lbw b Woakes 0 (SL 6-3)

A double-wicket maiden for Chris Woakes!

It nipped back a lot, and caught Mathews in front while trying to leave. A poor shot but it's a very good ball, not one you want when you're just getting your innings started and trying to find your feet.

Sri Lanka have lost three wickets for no runs in 10 balls.

  18. Sri Lanka reviewpublished at 7 overs

    Oh, it's carnage.

Chris Woakes nips one back in and strikes Angelo Mathews in front. It's given - but Mathews reviews, perhaps thinking it's too high.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 6.1 overs

    Madushka c Root b Woakes 4 (SL 6-2)

    Another!

It's a loose shot, and Nishan Madushka looks visibly frustrated with a shake of the head as he departs.

Chris Woakes goes a little wider, a little fuller, and tempts him into the drive. It was probably there to be hit but Madushka pays the price for minimal footwork, edging through to Joe Root at second slip.

Sri Lanka, after a disciplined start, are in a pickle with both openers gone.

  20. SL 6-1published at 6 overs

Kusal Mendis is the new batter, and safely leaves his first three balls from Atkinson.

The Surrey paceman continues his impressive start in Test cricket, putting early pressure on Sri Lanka here.
