What is encouraging for me is, unlike many times in the past, Shafali Verma is playing with a mixture of caution, and we have not seen anything reckless so far.

This has been India's best powerplay of this World Cup, with 64 runs coming off the first 10 overs.

  3. Ind 64-0published at 10 overs

Good over from Nonkululeko Mlaba to end the powerplay, only a single and that comes off Shafali Verma's edge after she was squared up.

The first 10 overs definitely belong to India, though.

Safe to say that the rain has not done huge amounts to the pitch, and it is coming along to the bat really nicely. South Africa haven't done enough either - they are neither bowling too full nor too short.

    No stopping that.

Too full from Nadine de Klerk and Smriti Mandhana threads the ball through the covers on the drive.

All class and precision from the left-hander. Nothing new there, I suppose.

  6. Ind 58-0published at 8 overs

Lovely drive again from Smriti Mandhana but Laura Wolvaardt gives chase and flicks the ball back just before the boundary cushion.

The South Africa captain's reaction suggests she didn't think she did prevent the boundary but the third umpire checks and she definitely did. Two runs saved.

    Back yourself, Laura!

This is the only fourth 50-run opening partnership in World Cup final history.

We've got an early look at spin as Nonkululeko Mlaba comes into the attack... and is pumped for four first ball by Shafali Verma.

Much too full from Mlaba and drilled through the covers.

It would be interesting to see how South Africa fight back here, as Marizanne Kapp almost always sets the tone, and it'll be interesting to see how the first change bowlers react to their leading pacer being whacked around the park.

  10. Ind 51-0published at 7 overs

    Freebie from Marizanne Kapp.

The ball starts on leg stump and shapes to go down the leg side, allowing Smriti Mandhana to clip just behind square for four.

That brings up the fifty partnership for the first wicket in no time at all.

Shafali Verma continues to use her feet and completely gets in the way of the wicketkeeper. She is not afraid to use her feet despite the wicketkeeper coming up to the stumps.

South Africa have to be careful because this could get out of hand very quickly at this rate.

Ayabonga Khaka swings one down the leg side and with Sinali Jafta up to the stumps, trying to keep Shafali Verma in her crease, the ball gets by and races away for five wides.

Because Mandhana is so dominant behind square, South Africa's fielders have all gone squarer, and the cover region is free. And because she is so good, she can manipulate the field.

It doesn't all have to be crash, bang, wallop to get the ball to the fence.

Smriti Mandhana just guides this one past short third to the boundary and then unfurls a gorgeous drive through the covers for four more.

    Sumptuous batting.

Stats suggest this is going to be a high-scoring game. Four games here in this World Cup, and we have had four scores in excess of 300 and three scores in excess of 338.

Shafali Verma is so good to watch but so frustrating as well. But I am wondering why Marizanne Kapp has not bowled a bouncer yet?

  17. Ind 31-0published at 5 overs

Shafali Verma middles another drive but this time picks out the fielder in the covers.

Three dot balls end the over to give South Africa a bit of respite.

Lovely shot from Verma. Uses her feet again, but check drives through cover.

  19. Ind 31-0published at 4.3 overs

Bang! Right out of the middle of Shafali Verma's bat again.

A couple of steps down the track and she smokes Marizanne Kapp through the covers with a checked drive.

Four more! Whipped through mid-wicket this time. Verma is really taking the game to the South Africa bowlers.

  20. Ind 22-0published at 4 overs

South Africa might have hoped for a bit more movement off the surface with the pitch having been under cover for a good while.

However, it's not done much as yet. The overhead conditions mean there is some swing but it isn't troubling Shafali Verma - she has looked in great touch early on.
