England have got a nice way into this tournament now, South Africa's is the opposite.

They've got two games now that are very important, the most pivotal is probably against New Zealand.

If they lose that then they will have to beat one of Australia or India, you can be pretty much certain of that because their net run-rate has taken such a hit.

This is an enormous result for England and it gives them a bit of a cushion if something does go wrong against Bangladesh - the weather forecast is not great.

They play Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan next, games they would expect to win and if they do win them, they'll have four wins in the bank before they play New Zealand, India and Australia - and that might be enough.

  5. 'A captain's dream'published at 13:39 BST 3 October

Nat Sciver-Brunt of EnglandImage source, Getty Images

England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt: "Massively please. Everyone was really on it in the field. A few first ball wickets as well. A captain's dream."

On Linsey Smith: "She stuck to her strengths. She can swing the ball and we knew she was a good match-up being a left-hander. It was really crucial to break that opening partnership and she was perfect for that."

On England's spin attack: "It's amazing. Sarah Glenn is on the bench too! We are so blessed to have so many great cricketers in this squad."

  6. 'You need a short memory in this tournament'published at 13:37 BST 3 October

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt: "It is not the way we wanted to start the tournament.

"Not our best work with the bat but we have not changed overnight. We have shown resilience before and we will put this behind us as quick as we can.

"They bowled well with the new ball. Linsey Smith was excellent and we did not expect that much swing. We were a bit pushy at the ball too so could not get into our innings."

On Ayabonga Khaka: "She is okay. She can be effective in the middle and we wanted to get the spin on early to see if it worked.

"We have done good things in the past. We had good preparation so we will move forward as fast as we can. You need a short memory in this tournament."

  7. England top of the tablepublished at 13:35 BST 3 October

England didn't go quite as hard as some might have liked in that chase but they still knocked off the runs with more than 35 overs to spare.

It means, with everyone having played a game now, England top the table with their net run-rate of 3.77 comfortably better than that of Australia in second.

Early days but early momentum in a World Cup is no bad thing!

I’ve criticised England in the past for poor performances but credit where credit is due. Professional, clinical performance today. Great start to the tournament.

  9. 'I backed myself and it came off'published at 13:30 BST 3 October

Player of the Match England's Linsey Smith: "I am really delighted with how we did. To get that start, for me, was special and importantly, we got the win.

"Lottie [Charlotte Edwards] spoke to me and told me I was opening [the bowling] which I was excited about. It was a tough challenge but the conditions suited me and I am proud I did well.

"I backed myself and didn't overcomplicate things. I try to keep the stumps in play as much as possible and it came off today."

On England's spin bowling: "There is huge talent in the squad. We all offer different parts of the game so we can keep learning and growing as a unit."

  10. Postpublished at 13:27 BST 3 October

Linsey Smith started it all off for England with three wickets in the powerplay, she finished with figures of 3-7.

No surprise then that the left-arm spinner is named player of the match. We'll bring you what she had to say shortly.

The perfect way to start the World Cup from England. If they can play this way throughout the tournament, they may well win the whole thing.

    Eng 73-0

England are off to the best possible start at this World Cup!

About as comprehensive a win as you'll see.

A brilliant bowling effort to skittle South Africa for 69 in just 20.4 overs and they've knocked off the runs in 14.1 without breaking sweat.

Amy Jones ends unbeaten on 40, Tammy Beaumont on 21 after clipping a boundary to finish the job - and it's a job extremely well done by Nat Sciver-Brunt's side.

Amy Jones clips the ball to the fielder so the chase will creep into the 15th over... But another four hours seems unlikely, Al.

I mentioned to my wife that I hoped the cricket would last long enough for me to listen on my drive home but that doesn't seem likely now. I still have four hours to go!

    And again!

Less aesthetically pleasing, not quite as well timed, but it's the same result for Amy Jones.

England are one blow away from victory.

If England win this match by 10 wickets, it will be their third victory by that margin in World Cups, and the first since 1988.

    Amy Jones goes again.

It's another of those lovely pick-up shots over the leg side. Past straight mid-wicket for four more.

Tammy Beaumont is trying but she is not really getting going. You get the feeling that she is slightly frustrated.
