It's great from the perspective of an England fan to see Mark Wood and Jofra Archer starting the year fresh and ready to bowl quick.

  2. Ind 0-0published at 0.4 overs

Four dot balls from Jofra Archer to start.

  3. Postpublished at 15:22 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Right, Jofra Archer has the ball in hand at Eden Gardens. He looks like he means business.

Jos Buttler has a slip, short leg and leg slip in place. Early wickets key.

    Sanju Samson is on strike.

When Brendon McCullum got the England red-ball job he said he didn't want the white-ball job because England were in such a great place, trying to chase 500 in one-day games, and now they have lost that identity. So McCullum's job with this white-ball team is to give them a real identity.

Without questioning his evident talent, I’m struggling to understand Jacob Bethell’s selection - I slightly fear the Bethell hype train is coming at the cost of proven white-ball players. Re. Pete’s comment on Joe Root, I feel inclined to agree and feel as if he very much still has a place in this T20 team if he wants it.

I thought India were outstanding. Although never judge a pitch until both teams have batted on it!

Polemikos: The balance of England's team is all wrong. We've reverted to a team of 'bits and pieces' cricketers like we had in the late 90s. Too many semi all-rounders. You don't need seven bowlers in a T20.

David Slinger: Jos Buttler has cost us this match by not farming the strike after Jacob Bethell got out. The brainless cricket continues from England.

Horwichbloke19: No one was expecting anything special from Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton. What's the excuse for Liam Livingstone, Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell?

India were superb. They had every option covered even without their frontline bowlers and England could not cope with their spinners.

    Thank you kindly, Matthew.

Three England batters into double figures.

Not the greatest start with the bat for the Bazball white-ball era.

Well England have left room for improvement at the start of their new era.

The fact that England will have batted out the 20 overs is the smallest of mercies. That feels very sub-par, Buttler aside.

    Another wide from Hardik Pandya...

  14. Eng 131-9published at 19.5 overs

A slower ball tricks Mark Wood into another mistimed stroke.

That's what England bowlers will have to do in India's innings.

Mark Wood has two balls to bash a couple of boundaries...

  16. wicket

Straight up into the air and easily taken. Jofra Archer couldn't get anything away really.

Jofra Archer fails to find the middle again but the ball falls into a gap for two more.
