  1. Eng 99-6published at 15 overs

I get why there's criticism for attacking shots in Tests but this is T20 cricket. It's the way they have to go.

Gus Atkinson chews up four dot balls and then takes a single from the last, starving Jos Buttler of the strike further.

I know it is only the first game of the new white-ball era for us under Brendon McCullum, but if this game doesn’t go our way I hope we don’t get the same blase responses after the game as we did with some of the Test losses last year. I don’t mind if we get outplayed and lose but when it’s silly mistakes from our own players it’s hard to hear them being defended.

  3. Eng 97-6published at 14 overs

Gus Atkinson is at the crease with six overs to go. That seems problematic.

Pretty much everyone has looked skittish and uncertain with the bat today apart from Buttler. But this is a masterclass in fielding and catching from India.

  5. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 13.3 overs

    J Overton c Reddy b Axar 2 (Eng 95-6)

    And another to Kieran's list...

The slide to spin continues as Jamie Overton heaves the ball high into the Kolkata dark.

India's fielding has been brilliant and Nitish Kumar Reddy steadies himself to take a towering catch.

False shot percentage vs spin today:

    Jos Buttler - 17%

    Other batters - 30%

  7. Eng 94-5published at 13 overs

    Buttler 59, J Overton 2

Jos Buttler takes a single to keep the strike too.

  8. Eng 93-5published at 12.5 overs

    And again from Buttler.

This time off the back foot and perfectly placed along the ground for four.

  9. Eng 89-5published at 12.3 overs

So much is on Jos Buttler now.

He brings about that classic silence that greets an opposition boundary in India by hammering the ball through the covers.

  10. Eng 84-5published at 12 overs

And now India are into England's bowling all-rounders with Jamie Overton joining his skipper.

It's going to be tough from here.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 11.5 overs

    Bethell c Abhishek b Pandya 7 (Eng 83-5)

Pressure was building on young Jacob Bethell and once he nails one it goes straight to the fielder.

He has pulled the ball right into the hands of deep square leg.

  12. Eng 83-4published at 11.4 overs

Jos Buttler offers a word of encouragement to Jacob Bethell who has faced 13 balls for his seven runs.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Jos Buttlerpublished at 11.1 overs

Jos Buttler dabs one to move to fifty from 34 balls.

Does he have to reign it in a little here?

Conrad Davies: A better XI for England it may be, however, Liam Livingstone is still one place too high. I would have had him at seven, with Jacob Bethell at six and Jamie Smith at five. England are one batter short.

  15. Eng 80-4published at 11 overs

    Buttler 49, Bethell 5

Two wides help England in this over after drinks because the runs off the bat have slowed.

Four come off Ravi Bishnoi - all of them singles.

England would be batting in a super over and people would text us saying batters should have had a look.

Brendon McCullum’s analysis of a ‘flat pitch’ looking a little problematic. We’re a spinner light you’d think.

    John in Newcastle

England still rubbish against spin and need to have a look before lashing out.

    Tom

Stupid batting. They have time to hit two or three singles to get used to the pitch before trying to hit every ball out the ground.

Jacob Bethell will be glad to see the back of Varun Chakaravarthy, even if it's just for an over.

I'm not sure any England players bar Buttler are picking him.

Since the start of 2022, England have lost four or more wickets before the 10 over mark on 12 previous occasions, only once did they go on to win (vs Australia, Manuka Oval 2022).

The TV commentators aren't happy with how quickly that stumping decision was made.

Jacob Bethell's foot did leave the crease eventually. He might have had a millimetre behind when the stumps were broken.
