Summary

  1. Eng 85-1published at 17 overs

Mixed over from Vishwa Fernando. A long hop that Pope put away first up, a couple down the leg side, but also an absolute beauty in the middle. Wobbled like a jelly, that one.

    Phil Tufnell
Former England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

There are balls that you should leave and there are balls that you should hit

That was short and wide it deserved everything it got. Poor delivery.

  3. Eng 84-1published at 16.1 overs

Loosener first up from Vishwa Fernando and Pope cuts for four.

  4. Eng 80-1published at 16 overs

Asitha Fernando with the first over of the afternoon. One for Duckett, three for Pope, and a general increase in the contentment levels all around the ground.

Thanks for all your one-cap wonders / equally wonderful players who should have had a cap.

Honourable mentions to Sam Northeast, Tom Banton, Andy Lloyd, Mark Benson, Jamie Overton, Alan Wells, Rodney Redmond of New Zealand and even Steve Bruce.

I reckon Brucey was a decent cricketer, you know. He may well have his hands full at Blackpool for the time being, though.

    PLAY. RESUMES. IMMINENTLY.

58 overs to go today (in theory).

    Quick reminder...

In a couple of minutes, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope will descend the Pavilion steps at the Oval. The former is unbeaten on 51, the latter on 15.

England, having been stuck in, are 76 for 1.

The Sam-train keeps on growing. Anyone on the Sam Dalling train?! No. Ok, fair enough.

Is there any reason why Sam Curran never seems to get a mention as the obvious replacement from Chris Woakes? Has he stated he is not interested in Test match cricket because he wants to concentrate on franchise cricket? Or is it a management decision to save him from burnout?

Sam Cook is a brilliant shout. His time, I hope, will come.

I’ll join the Sam train…Sam Cook? A record of 300 wickets at 19.43. If that isn’t enough for a call-up - what is?

**10 minute until the re-start klaxon**

15.10 BST is when they will resume. 58 overs left, with tea at 17.10 BST.

19.00 BST is the scheduled close but we can, light-allowing (LOL), have an extra 30 minutes.

Ali Brown. What a player. Remember him bashing 250+ in a 50 over game. C&G Trophy, maybe?

Surely Ali Brown at Surrey deserved a nod for a Test cap? 17,000 FC runs at over 42. Remembered as more of a destructive one-day opener but had the résumé to show he could do it in whites. He also played during an era where England weren't quite as good (late 90s / early 00s).

I worry that this generation’s Hildreth will be Sam Hain. Too talented not to gain any Test caps. Unfortunately, England's middle order is very strong and has been for some time - could there be an opening at no. 3?

Never against a Wayne Madsen mention. Pretty sure he gave up the Derbyshire captaincy eight or nine summers ago to chase a Test call, too.

Still, England's loss is Italy's gain.

Surely Wayne Madsen should have got the call at some point. He's still knocking 100s into his 40s.

Chapple is a great shout, Jon. Averaged the best part of 25 with the bat, too.

Played a single ODI in 2006. What was the venue? Go on, I bet you can't get it. No? Belfast.

I’m sure you’re getting a large amount of messages about Glen Chapple never getting a test cap. Lancashire fans of a certain vintage will remember just how good he was. 985 first class wickets speaks for itself.

Chippy can't have been far away, David. 1,000+ runs and the best part of 50 wickets in 1980 and 1981. Some cracking numbers.
