Richard (chippy) Williams, batted no. 3 behind G. Cook and W. Larkin's and ahead of AJ Lamb and P. Willey. Easily the best player of his generation not to be capped by England.

    David, North Yorkshire

If we were engaged in a spot of QI, Sam T would just have set the klaxons off. Hildreth is the go-to. What a player he was.

I wrote an article about James Hildreth for "The Full Toss" website. He was the next cab off the rank when Bopara and Morgan were given red ball chances. Great short format careers, but I feel Hildreth should have been given a chance over them in the full whites.

What are you doing in just 27 minutes? Watching Test match cricket, of course.

We've just had word that they will be cracking on again 15.10 BST.

    Ohhhhh, I'm a happy cricket live-texter.

Bit of discussion on Test Match Special on the topic of one-cap wonders.

But what I want to know is who, in your fine minds, should have been in that bracket?

And be nice. I don't want any 'X played 15 Tests but only should have had one cap' stuff. I'm looking for the best players on the county circuit who really ought to have got a go.

Jonathan is backing our Stephan up (not that we ever doubted him). The cricketing gods giveth with the right hand, and taketh away with the left.

Update from pitch side. It is looking a bit brighter, but unfortunately it is also wetter. A lot more rain coats and umbrellas coming out

Alas the light worsened, and off they went with England 76-1. That was a couple of hours ago now, and they are yet to make it back out...

Bad news on that front, folks. Our man Stephan Shemilt on the ground has just reported it is chucking down. How can he be sure? Oh, he's definitely gone and stood outside in the rain for at least a couple of minutes just to ensure 100% accuracy in his reporting.

England skipper Ollie Pope wasn't too perturbed. "It probably lends itself to a bowl first, but it’s an opportunity for us to put our pads on and get a score on the board."

    And so they cracked on...

Ben Duckett steadfastly refused to leave a single ball (never change, Ben, never change). He had reached 51 from 58 balls by the time it was deemed too dark to keep on cracking on.

Dan Lawrence came, looked uncomfortable for 5 off 21 balls, and went.

Ollie Pope came, and is still there on 14.

For those of you just logging on, you've missed, as Tony flags, precisely 15 overs.

England were, unsurprisingly, stuck in having lost the toss.

If ever there was a day to bowl first, this was it.

Credit where credit's due to the umpires if this doesn't end up resuming. 15.0 overs (where we are now) results in a full refund, whereas 15.1 overs means only 50%!

Paid £90 a ticket for a day at the cricket to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary… it’s not raining and the floodlights are on! Please get this match started again!!

I'm inclined to agree, Paul. Whether you like the Bob & Baz approach or not, it cannot be said that they do not have a clear plan. And the players very much buy into it.

Really entertaining & informative interviews with Baz & Rob Key. Emphasising the importance of creating the right environment for players to feel at ease, show their talent & flourish. Simple but highly effective time & time again over the last few years.

Thanks Mike. I'm carrying more than hope, at least of clear skies...the view out of my window is currently glorious.

Sadly, from the perspective of this Test match getting back under way, I'm in Cheshire where my poor dogs are trying to find a cool spot to rest their weary heads.

That's a wrap on Rob Key - an interesting interview, that. Lots of topics covered.

Now, I had hoped that I'd be around just for the lunch break and hand over for the resumption of actual cricket.

Unfortunately we've got no sign of any play at The Oval, where it looks cool and dark - but not wet.

Here's Sam Dalling, carrying hope of clear skies and some play.

England managing director Rob Key on Test Match Special: "We are into the schedule and trying to work out how we want to start and prep.

"Ultimately you try to evolve every day and get better. That has started now."

  20. Key on Flintoffpublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 6 September

England managing director Rob Key on Test Match Special: "Freddie is loving coaching. He will do more stuff with us in the winter.

"Sometimes it is a trait that is not spoken about enough - he is kind. All of the things Fred can be, funny, extrovert, he is kind. It is an underrated quality. Brendon and Fred might not be ones that plan the best but are the ones that make you feel the best.

"Players won't remember the tactics you told them three days before the game but they will always remember how you make them feel. You can have tactics that are fantastic but if it is not the right environment it is not going to work. Sometimes it is a mad tactic but the people feel empowered."
