Track World Cup: Storey, Trott & Houvenaghel win team pursuit gold

Storey teamed up with Trott and Houvenaghel for the first time in Cali

Paralympic gold medallist Sarah Storey helped Great Britain's track cyclists to women's team pursuit World Cup gold in Cali, Colombia.

Storey, Laura Trott and Wendy Houvenaghel clocked three minutes and 21.830 seconds, well ahead of New Zealand's 3:25.618.

The United States beat Lithuania to take bronze.

Storey could become the first British athlete to compete in both the Olympics and Paralympics in 2012.

The women's pursuit team are the only British representation in Colombia, which is hosting the second of the four World Cup meetings.

And the event was a chance to see how Storey, 34, would fit into the team alongside world champions Houvenaghel and Trott.

There could be further opportunities to come, depending on selection, at the World Cup meetings in Beijing and London early next year, ahead of the World Championships in Melbourne in April.

Manchester's Storey, who was was born without a left hand, won two gold medals in swimming as a 14-year-old at the 1992 Paralympics, and has since gone on to collect five swimming gold medals and two in cycling.

Trott will compete in the omnium and Houvenaghel will race in the individual pursuit over Friday and Saturday in Cali.

Germany's men's team sprinters earlier broke the world record for their event, posting a time of 42.914 seconds in qualifying before going on to win gold in the final. Britain has not sent a men's sprint team to the event.
