Joanna Rowsell hopes to combine track with road racing

Olympic track champion Joanna Rowsell says she would like to combine track and road competition in the future.

The 24-year-old claimed her first road crown in the women's time trial at the British Championships last month.

She told BBC London: "First and foremost I am still a track rider as that is what I'm funded to do [but] I'd definitely like to explore that.

"I'd really like to be able to ride both the track and the road at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow."

Rowsell, who won team pursuit gold alongside Dani King and Laura Trott at London 2012, is part of the Wiggle-Honda road cycling squad alongside her British team-mates.

The Sutton-born cyclist could get an opportunity to see if competing in both disciplines is possible later this year.

"I'll be back on the track in August and preparing for the forthcoming track season," Rowsell said.

"But if I get selected, the World Time Trial Championships [in September] will be a really good test as it is the same week as the British National Track Championships.

"If I do do it, I'll be in Italy competing and then fly straight back to Manchester and then compete on the track.

"That would be really good to see how it affects the two and see how my track competition is after a road competition.

"It could be a compete disaster and I might not bother doing it again.

"The Commonwealth events are different to Olympic events as there is no team pursuit. There are just individual events.

"That makes it a little bit easier to do your own preparation and do your own thing, to an extent."
