Tour de Yorkshire: Armitstead wants longer women's race

Britain's Lizzie Armitstead says she would "love" the Tour de Yorkshire women's race to be over three days rather than one.

The race organisers announced on Monday that the women's race would be held over four laps of a 20km circuit around York on Saturday, 2 May.

The men's race will take place between 1 and 3 May.

Asked about a women's race over three days, Armitstead said: "I'd absolutely love to have a home race like that."

The Tour de Yorkshire is a new professional race and will be run by Welcome to Yorkshire and Amaury Sport Organisation, which operates the Tour de France.

Armitstead does not currently expect to compete in the event.

"Unfortunately it clashes with a UCI race - a higher prestige race in Europe for women," she said.

"At the moment, I am down to ride for my team in Luxembourg. Potentially things change so I may get home for it."
