  1. 'I don't think anyone says they've loved every part of their journey'published at 19:13 British Summer Time 7 September

    Men's S12 100m butterfly final

More from Great Britain's gold-medal winner Stephen Clegg to Channel 4: "I swam as a young kid, when I was 12, 14, hated it.

"Eighteen, I made a comeback and decided I wanted to get my life together and swimming has always been about self improvement rather than results.

"I don't think anyone says they've loved every part of their journey through swimming, or sport in general, it's a cruel environment to be in and you have to be very harsh on yourself at times, in my view, to really come away with multiple gold medals over multiple games, which is the target, which is pretty brutal."

"I want to say thank you to all my family, my friends that have come out today.

"I've got more love and admiration for those people, for those individuals that have supported me on this journey than I could ever put into words and even begin to really fathom but none of this happens without them.

"My coach Matt, he is the person that took a chance on me, 10 years ago along with Paul Wilson who works with Scottish Swimming and I owe them everything.

"Matt's been incredible with me, my team at home have been incredible, supportive and it was a disappointing fourth on Wednesday night but they've rallied around me and showed their love and support throughout and thank you."

I guess they're not laughing now.

  3. 'A lot of people doubted me'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 7 September

    Men's S12 100m butterfly final

More from Great Britain's gold-medal winner Stephen Clegg to Channel 4: "I think as a teenager I was in a really dark place and I suffered a lot with the idea of mediocrity and the ordinary and I really didn't the like person I was when I was a kid.

"As an adult and as a man I really suffer with the pursuit of excellence and I think that's why I'm always striving for some more and to better every result.

"I evaluate in how it's gone as a performance rather than just a result and it's think it's a harsh truth that it's really easy to sit in your own pain and it's not always very easy to sit in your own pain and it's not always very easy to take a risk and to take a chance on change.

"This last ten years have always been about that and this is the reward for that roll of the dice I took ten years ago, I think a lot of people thought I was crazy when I said I wanted to come back and take a shot at being Paralympic champion and a lot of people doubted me and laughed and thought I was just chasing a pipe dream and following in my family footsteps and many people thought I didn't have the drive.

"It's nice to finally be here."

Great Britain's gold-medal winner Stephen Clegg to Channel 4: "Yeah, incredible.

"I would have liked to have gone a bit quicker. After that [100m] backstroke, that was incredible. I broke a world record and I'd be coming in here chasing that but as soon as I got the medal round my neck, I didn't care about the record.

"It's similar for this one. The time wasn't amazing but I came to get the gold and I got the gold so I can't be too disappointed."

Stephen Clegg came agonisingly close to topping the podium in this event in Tokyo three years but had to settle for silver.

The 28-year-old made up for the disappointment by winning his first Paralympic gold in the men’s 100m backstroke and set a world record on day three in Paris. The enormity of it all engulfed him, as he explained.

"Growing up, I didn’t think I was ever going to be Paralympic champion and a lot of people didn’t think that'd be possible for me either,” he told BBC Sport Scotland.

"I was confident, don’t get me wrong. I wasn't coming in through this year thinking this was out of the possibility.

"Three years ago, I missed out by something like six hundredths of a second and that crushed me. But now I got it, and in a world record time.

"Doing it in a time that no-one has ever done before is something I'm really overwhelmed by."
