A few months ago his participation looked very unlikely.

  16. Boccia gold 'dream come true' for McGuirepublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 3 September

    Boccia - BC4 men's individual final

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Stephen McGuire, winner of the men's BC4 individual boccia gold on Monday, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:

"It’s a dream come true and pretty surreal. The halfway stage was 3-3 and it could go either way. Luckily I got five points in the third end that set me up going into the last end."

On a pep talk from flatmate and previous Paralympic gold medallist David Smith:

"It was something I’d talked about with my coach as well, but David’s been in that position before. When he won his first medal he was absolutely delighted in 2012 to get a silver but he wished it was a gold at that point.

"He said don't settle for the silver, just go for the gold and luckily it all came together.

"The beauty of boccia is that it’s designed for the people with the most severe disabilities and we can compete at the highest level.

"Some athletes can’t throw the ball so they use a ramp or an assistive device. I’m a thrower so I propel the ball but there’s a full range of disabilities and it’s wonderful to watch."

On how his participation was put at risk after a fall:

"Just at home I’d fallen and I broke my femur and I broke my knee and that set me back 18 months.

"For a full year I was not able to compete and for 18 months I was just not competitive, then it was trying to build myself back up to where I could qualify and then be competitive enough to be here."
