Senegal international Guirane N'Daw has joined Ipswich on a season-long loan from French club St Etienne.
Town are now awaiting international clearance and the 28-year-old will not play against Blackpool on Saturday.
"He'll bring a bit of height, a bit of strength and experience," manager Paul Jewell told BBC Radio Suffolk.
N'Daw, who stands 6ft 3in tall, is familiar with English football after playing 29 games for Birmingham during a loan spell last season.
"He's a good player," Jewell said. "[Former Birmingham manager] Chris Hughton speaks very highly of him and we were pleased he wasn't playing against us - he was at the African Nations and he was injured when we played here."
However, Jewell insisted that N'Daw, who began his club with Sochaux and also had a spell with Nantes before joining St Etienne in 2010, would not walk straight into the Ipswich side, which has picked up four points from six in the opening games of the Championship season.
He said: "The team's playing well at the moment and the two lads Massimo (Luongo) and Luke (Hyam) in there - and Andy Drury - are doing very well.
"We want to bring people into the squad to give competition for places because we're really short on numbers and if we got a couple of injuries we'd be really stretched."
Meanwhile, Ipswich have cancelled the contract of Canada international Jaime Peters by mutual consent.
The 25-year-old joined the club in 2005, external but only made one appearance last season and spent time on loan at Bournemouth.
"It's not really worked out for him here since I've been here," Jewell told the club website. , external
"We have a lot of options in the wide areas and he's not had a look in at first-team level, so it's best if he moves on because the lad needs to be playing football."
