Chelmsford City have sacked manager Glenn Pennyfather after nearly four years in charge after missing promotion in the Blue Square Bet South play-offs.

The Essex side lost Saturday's semi-final second leg against Salisbury 2-0 and were knocked out 2-1 on aggregate.

"Glenn has been a fantastic servant to our club and an extremely good man who has brought us a lot of joy over the years," said chairman Mansell Wallace.

"It goes without saying that we wish Glenn every success for his future."

Former Southend and Crystal Palace midfielder Pennyfather stepped up from assistant manager at Melbourne Stadium in the 2009-10 campaign.

The 50-year-old went on to guide Chelmsford to the play-offs in three of his four seasons in charge and took them to the second round of the FA Cup in three consecutive years.

"We feel now is the right time for a change, and we'll be advertising for a new manager to guide us forward," added Wallace.

Following Saturday's defeat Pennyfather said he would be considering his future.

He told BBC Essex: "I'm hurting quite badly after this loss. I honestly felt it was our year.

"I'll sit down with the chairman and the board to see where we go from here but I feel there's unfinished business for me here.

"I'll let the dust settle and also have a chat with my family and then we'll see."
