Captain David Pipe set for fresh Newport County contract

Captain David Pipe has pledged his future to Newport County following their promotion to the Football League.

Newport secured promotion with a 2-0 win over Wrexham in the Conference Premier Promotion final at Wembley.

Pipe says he has shaken hands with manager Justin Edinburgh on a new deal to remain with the newly promoted League Two club.

"I've spoken to him personally and shook his hand, so we'll go on from there," Pipe said.

"With a person like the gaffer and myself, we're men's men so a shake of the hand is good Pipe set for fresh Newport dealenough for me. I'm sure I'll sign the forms over the next couple of days."

Pipe, who won one full Wales cap against the United States in 2003, joined Newport initially on non-contract terms in September 2012

The 29-year-old is hopefully other players will follow his lead by committing to Newport.

"I'd like to think they've got the same mentality as me," Pipe added.

"I enjoy going into training every day. The gaffer's got a good blend of seriousness and banter.

"I've been at a few clubs before and some lads don't want to go into training. It's a happy place to be and it's a club going in the right direction."

The former Coventry, Notts County and Bristol Rovers midfielder says he is enjoying his role as Newport captain and the responsibility that brings with it.

"I've been captain of Wales before but that's just turn up and you're captain," Pipe said.

"There's a lot of pressure on your shoulders [as] captain people don't know about off the pitch, as well as on the pitch.

"But I'd like to think I thrive on pressure and Im very happy to be part of it."
