Torquay United manager Alan Knill is hoping to secure the signing of former Barnsley defender Dale Tonge.

The Gulls have made an offer to bring the 28-year-old right-back, who was at League Two rivals Rotherham last season, to Plainmoor.

"We are in negotiations and we will see where that goes." Torquay manager Alan Knill told the club website.

"He is somebody we like and somebody who knows the league very well and we've put an offer to him."

Knill added: ''I spoke to him and he came down to the area last week.

''He plays as a right-back and is the sort of player we are looking for.

"I could have easily brought in a younger player, but we wanted more experience at the back.

"He is also at an age where he still thinks he can be better.''
