Gary Alexander: Crawley Town striker to fight for place

Experienced Crawley Town striker Gary Alexander has vowed to fight for his place in the team.

Alexander finished last season on loan at AFC Wimbledon after scoring five times in 33 appearances for the Reds.

The 33-year-old told BBC Sussex: "I went out on loan last season but I was always coming back.

"I will work hard and not just throw the towel in. I didn't have the greatest season last year and I want to put that right."

The Swindon, Hull, Leyton Orient, Millwall and Brentford man has started both of Crawley's games this season following his return to the Broadfield Stadium.

"I probably can't play as many games as I'd like to as I am getting a little bit older," he added.

"I worked hard in pre-season and after Billy Clarke's wife went into labour I went into the side.

"There are two places up for grabs and hopefully I can keep working hard.

"In however many years I have got left I want to play as many games as I can."

Alexander, who joined Crawley from Brentford in March 2012, opened his account for the season in the West Sussex club's 4-3 defeat by Cheltenham in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.

Despite beating Coventry 3-2 in their opening League One match on Saturday, Alexander has warned the club need to tighten up defensively.

"It is nice on a personal note to score a goal but you want to win games," he said.

"In two games we have scored three goals but made it hard for ourselves. We should be seeing games out a lot easier if we score three goals.

"We will not blame individuals as it is a team game.

"The gaffer [Richie Barker] will look at the video and then we will work on it to put it right."
