Man Utd v Spurs: David Moyes furious with referee Howard Webb

David Moyes said it was "scandalous" Manchester United were not awarded a late penalty in their Premier League defeat by Tottenham at Old Trafford.

With United 2-1 down, Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris slid out to challenge Ashley Young, making contact with the winger but failing to touch the ball.

"It's an incredible decision, in fact probably one of the worst I think I saw," said United manager Moyes.

He was also angry that Howard Webb booked Adnan Januzaj for diving.

But it was the Young decision - Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood admitted he also thought it was a penalty - that most infuriated Moyes, who will not be charged for his comments.

"The goalkeeper comes out, Ashley Young gets the ball before him and he follows through," the former Everton boss told BBC Sport.

"If you follow through on a player anywhere else on the pitch with your foot high, it would be a red card.

"I find it incredible, but the people who employ the referees are going to have to look at that and see if they get that right."

Moyes said several other decisions were contentious, including the one that resulted in a yellow card for Januzaj.

"It certainly isn't a dive," said the Scot, who felt Spurs defender Danny Rose had touched the youngster. "It's the wrong decision."

Moyes was also unhappy that he was asked about the Januzaj incident before being quizzed about the Young penalty decision.

"I find it strange that you ask me about that and not the challenge by the goalkeeper," said Moyes, who has spoken to both Januzaj and Young in the past about diving.

United are now 11 points behind leaders Arsenal after suffering their fourth home defeat in the league and their sixth overall this season.

Spurs went 2-0 up thanks to goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen before Danny Welbeck clawed one back for the hosts.

When asked about the Young decision, Sherwood said his immediate reaction was that it was a penalty.

"It's one of them that could go either way," he said. "But if we have got away with that one, I'm pleased because I remember coming here with Harry [Redknapp in 2009].

"We were 2-0 up at half-time and Heurelho Gomes made a save. He quite clearly played the ball first, but they got a penalty."

Defeat for United ended a six-game winning run and gave Tottenham successive league victories at Old Trafford.

Their 3-2 win in September 2012 was their first league triumph at United's ground in almost 24 years.

"We got done on counter attacks," said Moyes. "I thought we were in control. The boys played well and we just could not take the opportunities when they came along."

The January transfer window is now open, but Moyes, who has previously said he does not believe there is good value to be had at this time of the season, said the defeat would have no bearing on his thinking.

"I thought my players did really well," he said. "If I was going to change my mind it wasn't going to be about today."
